City of Melbourne, Australia The Lost Dogs' Home Full time

At The Lost Dogs’ Home, we are a foundation in Victoria's animal welfare landscape, celebrated for our compassionate care of around 18,000 lost and abandoned dogs and cats every year. Beyond caring for animals, we are dedicated to providing diverse services such as veterinary health, behaviour, advocacy and community education programs, all aimed at giving animals the best chance of a happy and healthy life. Our mission is upheld by passionate individuals who embody a profound affinity for animals, community, and advocacy.

About the role

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Behaviour Veterinarian to join our Behaviour Department on a part-time basis at our North Melbourne shelter. In this unique and rewarding role, you will work closely with our Behaviour Team and Veterinary Services to assess, diagnose, and treat behavioural and related medical concerns for animals in our care - particularly dogs. You’ll also play a key role in supporting adopters post-adoption, contributing to successful long-term outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide behavioural veterinary assessments and psychopharmacological support for shelter animals, particularly dogs in our Behaviour Rehabilitation Program.
- Work collaboratively with Behaviour Trainers and Veterinary Services to develop and refine behaviour treatment plans.
- Deliver post-adoption behavioural veterinary support, including consultations and medication reviews.
- Apply fear-free, low-stress handling techniques to promote the emotional wellbeing of animals in our care.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of behavioural and medical assessments and treatment plans.
- Support a culture of humane, respectful animal care and advocate for behaviourally informed handling practices across the organisation.

About you

You are a registered veterinarian in Victoria with a passion for behavioural medicine and animal welfare. Whether you bring experience in this field or are eager to build your knowledge in behavioural practice, you’re driven by a commitment to fear-free handling and evidence-based care. You work collaboratively, communicate with empathy, and thrive in dynamic, purpose-driven environments.

Key Attributes

- Veterinary registration in Victoria (essential)
- Experience or strong interest in behavioural medicine
- Familiarity with force-free, reward-based training techniques
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to support and reassure clients navigating behavioural challenges with their pets
- A team-oriented approach and a commitment to animal welfare best practice
- Additional qualifications in behaviour (e.g., ANZCVS Membership in Behaviour, Fear-Free certification) are desirable

At The Lost Dogs’ Home, we cultivate an inclusive work environment that celebrates diversity. Our team enjoys a vibrant culture that fosters meaningful connections, both professionally and socially. Led by our dedicated social committee, we organise a wide range of engaging activities such as Paint and Sip Nights, Bowling, Trivia, and regular after-work gatherings. What we can offer

- A unique and rewarding career in animal welfare, where you can make a real difference in the lives of shelter animals.
- Fantastic career development opportunities, including financial assistance for approved studies.
- A supportive and passionate team, dedicated to developing your skills in animal welfare.
