A Project Director is required to lead the delivery of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) as part of a rapidly growing portfolio of renewable energy assets. This will require significant project management experience, including that of BESS, to ensure successful delivery of not only this first project, but subsequent projects which will include further BESS projects but also likely solar farms. This role can develop to become a Head of Project Delivery/Projects Director as the pipeline of projects grows. This may include other asset types including green hydrogen, pumped hydro. The growth is driven by both greenfield development and acquisition of operating or under construction assets. Currently the portfolio has two operating solar farms, one late stage BESS project about to start construction and several other acquisitions about to close. There are also greenfield development BESS projects. Further sites/projects are under consideration for development or acquisition, mainly more solar and BESS, but pumped hydro and green hydrogen are also longer-term targets. The business is the Australian operations of a large, listed company pursuing a technology driven decarbonization strategy that focuses on investments in renewable energy assets and new energy technologies, trading and supply of energy as well as demand and portfolio management solutions. The Australian business has an ambitious growth target with an active buy and build strategy, which includes development of projects in solar, battery and pumped hydro energy storage as well as the acquisition of existing renewable energy generation and storage assets. They are currently trading and have applied for an electricity retail license for CI& customers.

Key responsibilities

- Set up project governance systems and processes to manage project tasks and timeframes of project teams, external consultants & contractors.

- Participate in pre-contracts, commercial and procurement activities for BESS projects, including EPC RFPs, tender management, technical specification negotiations, scope definition and head terms.

- Manage the design and execution of all project packages including engineering, civil, mechanical, electrical, commissioning, SCADA and ancillary services.

- Ensure adherence to project implementation plans, identify issues & bottlenecks, and mitigate impact of project challenges.

- Lead end-to-end project delivery including setting up multidisciplinary project teams, onboarding & managing contractors, owner’s engineers, NSPs, government authorities, suppliers and 3rd party consultants via active contract management.

- Oversee all construction management activities including progress monitoring, planning & reporting, CAPEX budget control.

- Ensure integration of project & contract management to ensure cohesive project delivery according to contractual terms.

- Deliver stakeholder engagement, communication and negotiation with government and company stakeholders, such as TransGrid, AEMO, councils, planning, and OEMs to reach grid compliance, capacity levels and availability requirements up to provisional acceptance and hand over.

Requirements

- A relevant qualification in a technical, engineering or project management.

- Substantial previous experience in project management for the construction of renewable energy and electrical infrastructure assets, including battery energy storage assets (BESS).

- Advanced project management skills, preferably with pre-contracts involvement.

- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

- Adept at problem identification and resolution.

- Experience with project management related tools.

- Experience with HSEQ, risk management and contract management.

- An understanding of energy use and energy markets in Australia.

- Excellent time management and organisation skills.

- Proactive with high levels of initiative.

- Collaborative team player.

- Current driver’s licence.

- Willingness to travel regionally and interstate.

- Australian citizen or permanent resident.
