About WEHI & the Research Computing Platform
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) is a leading biomedical research organisation in Australia. The Research Computing Platform (RCP) team provides HPC and cloud support, pipeline development, and data-management expertise to accelerate discoveries across various themes, including cancer, infection, healthy ageing, and advanced technologies.
About the Position
Reporting to the Head of the Research Computing Platform, the Junior Research Data Engineer will assist in building and maintaining the Research Data Governance & Management (RDGM) system. Responsibilities include onboarding new instruments, developing data-management tools, and supporting researchers in data ingestion, validation, and management in a compliant and FAIR manner. The role involves designing and implementing metadata models for experimental and instrument data to improve interoperability and discoverability. This position offers early-career engineers practical experience in research data pipelines, metadata modeling, and user-focused tool development.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills—both written and oral—strong interpersonal abilities, and the capacity to independently learn new technical skills.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field; Master's degree is a plus.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python or R) and a database technology such as Postgres or MySQL.
- Familiarity with object-oriented concepts.
- Experience with Linux command-line environments and version control systems like Git.
- Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Personal qualities:
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently.
- Proactive, curious, and committed to continuous improvement.
- Comfortable working under guidance with a keen eye for issues.
- Highly collaborative, leveraging external skills for organizational benefit.
Desirable:
- Experience in a research or life-science environment.
- Understanding of data-management concepts: metadata, ETL, data validation, and FAIR principles.
- Knowledge of web development frameworks like React.
- Experience with API frameworks such as FastAPI.
- Exposure to HPC/batch systems (e.g., Slurm, PBS) and containerization (Docker, Singularity).
- Familiarity with workflow frameworks (Nextflow, Prefect.io, Airflow).
- Contributions to open-source projects or academic code repositories.
Terms of Appointment
This is a 2-year full-time position. Salary is at Research Support Employee (RSE) level 6 ($95,135 - $102,979), with up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options.
