What you’ll be doing
As an Unaccredited Trainee in Vascular Surgery, the primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of vascular surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The doctor is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
The Vascular Surgery department at St George Public Hospital provides a comprehensive vascular and endovascular surgical service. Trainees are exposed to both inpatient and outpatient management of vascular conditions. The Department consists of 5 consultant staff, 1 fellow, 2 accredited vascular SET trainees, 1 unaccredited registrar and 1 intern.
The primary location of the position will be St George Public Hospital. You may also be expected to work at St George Private Hospital and Sutherland Hospital.

St George Hospital is an accredited, principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales. It is the largest hospital in SESLHD with 627 inpatient beds. It is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and a leader in trauma and emergency management in NSW. The hospital’s proximity to Sydney airport makes it a vital service, providing first response to the airport precinct.
The hospital is in Kogarah, 14 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD and a kilometre from Botany Bay. It is well serviced by buses, trains and major roads. The area is well known for its cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, as well as its food and cultural markets which showcase the distinct flavours and traditions of Kogarah's multicultural community.
Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- A minimum of 3 years of postgraduate experience and previous experience in vascular surgery as a junior medical officer including sufficient clinical experience to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital
- Demonstrates ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills and judgment and expertise
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in afterhours overtime and on-call rosters.
- Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
