About the Role

School Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required. In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.

Essential Requirements

- Working with Children Check Clearance

- Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education and a willingness to undertake first aid training relevant to the School Learning Support Officer role.

- Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.

- Health support training to be provided based on student needs (subject to transition provisions).

Wangee Park School is located in Campsie and provides education for students with a moderate to severe intellectual disability, and/or physical disability and autism. The school has 8 classes with a maximum capacity of 50 students. Each class is staffed with a teacher and school learning support officer. The school delivers a curriculum that is appropriate to the needs of the students and operates within NESA guidelines. Student learning outcomes are identified and addressed through the development and implementation of personalised learning plans and supported by a number of whole school programs including communication, literacy and numeracy. The school has highly developed skills in collaborative teamwork, specialised teaching methodologies and is committed to operating as a learning community.

The school has strong partnerships with families, and the wider community. Collaboration with families is valued and utilised in order to provide high quality, engaging learning opportunities for all students.

The school also provides quality health care procedures for specific medical needs of students insuring they access learning programs within a range of environments. In addition to a diverse learning population, Wangee Park School caters for students from a diverse cultural background - 75% of families come from a non-English speaking background.

Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.

- Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.

- Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.

- Effective communication skills.
