Established in 1962, Belmore School is a specialist school catering for students 5-18 years who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment requiring paramedical support. Students have a wide range of intellectual abilities, and some have multiple disabilities and complex needs. All students are funded under the Program for Students with Disabilities, however we are currently transitioning students to be funded under the new Disability Inclusion Funding Model. Located in Stroud Street Balwyn with a frontage on Belmore Road, our school catchment area covers the northeast quadrant of Melbourne.

Belmore School has a highly qualified and experienced teaching team passionate about providing an optimum learning environment for our students. Supported by small class sizes and an extensive education support team, teachers aim to provide best practice in teaching and learning to enable each student to achieve their full potential. The teaching and education support team are supported by an onsite allied health team, this team comprises of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, a Music Therapist and an Allied Health Assistant. There is also an experienced Nurse on site at all times to manage students medical needs.The allied health team works closely with families, RCH, Orthokids and NDIS providers to ensure consistency for each student and promote optimal skill development and participation in the community.

Selection Criteria

SC1. Demonstrated knowledge, ability and experience in coordinating the provision of Speech Pathology Services, in the area of Special Education

SC3. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in collaboration with teaching teams to devise programs that establish and extend a student¿s functional communication and social skills in a range of contexts

SC5. Demonstrated ability to liaise and work with other therapists and specialist staff both internal and external to the school community

SC6. Highly developed organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently, utilise effective time management strategies, establish priorities and meet deadlines

Role

The Speech Pathologist will be responsible for the provision ofcommunicationandlanguagepathologyservices in aspecialised educational setting for 5-18 year olds with physical disabilities and/or requiring paramedical support. Belmore School has a maximum capacity of 60 students. The successful applicant will work in a transdisciplinary team with speech pathologists, physiotherapists, music therapist, teachers and education support staff to identify goals, deliver assessment and establish programs.Belmore's Speech Pathologists help to develop a range of skills in functional communication including use of language, speech, literacy and social skills. Students can explore both electronic and non electronic communication systems, with opportunities to expand and develop autonomous communication with all people in their environment. You will also be responsible for completing mealtimes assessments and training staff to best support our students.

Responsibilities

- To assist students to develop a range of skills in functional communication including use of language, speech, literacy and social skills for Belmore students aged 5 to 18 years.
- To regularly assess and review students¿mealtimerequirements,including eating, drinking and swallowing abilities.
- To assess communication abilities andmake recommendations on appropriatecommunication systems.
- To develop Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
- To support students¿ communication and participation inclassroomprograms.
- To design, implement and evaluate appropriate language and communication programs.
- To provide consultation to supportcapacity building for teachers, therapists and education support staff regardingintegration of language andcommunication programs within thecurriculum and classroom programs.
- To provide support and training to all staff regarding students communicationsystems.
- To provide support and training to all staff regarding students mealtimes
- To produce communication and mealtime profiles for all students on your caseload.
- To provide school based professional learning, training and workshops as required.
- To be proactive and take responsibility for own clinical supervision, professionallearning and growth.
- To undertake other duties as directed by the Principal and Allied Health leader.
