Overview

Hunter Medical Practice is located in the Hunter Valley towns of Muswellbrook, Denman and Merriwa. The practice is looking to recruit one or more GPs to join a vibrant team. All three locations are approximately 250–310 km from Sydney and are supported by a Practice Manager, registered nurses, and reception staff. The site is fully computerised with Best Practice software and offers mixed billing for pensioners, children under 16 and private patients. A long patient waiting list provides busy clinical activity for the appointed doctor.

Eligibility & Incentives

- Essential Criteria: General Australian Medical Registration or eligibility for Limited Registration.

- Preferred Start Date: Immediate.

- Full‑time employment with a salary commensurate with the GP contract.

- Rural incentive: eligible for the General Practice Rural Incentive Program – GP Component (GPRIP) and NSW Rural Doctors Network Grants.

- Driver’s licence and personal vehicle required; the doctor will drive between practices per the roster.

- Potential for VMO (Visiting Medical Officer) rights to work in attached hospitals and to be on call for the emergency department.

Task & Responsibilities

1. Attend to acute and chronic medical conditions presenting in general practice, including children and adults.

2. Perform history taking, clinical examination and management of patients.

3. Basic wound and burns care.

4. ECG interpretation and collection of pathology samples.

5. Desirable: skin excision of benign and small malignant tumours and lesions.

6. Suturing of lacerations, cryotherapy, intra‑articular injections, aspiration of cysts, abscess drainage, management of uncomplicated fractures and pap smears.

7. Appropriate referral to specialists.

8. Immunisations.

9. Management and patient education of chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, weight management and cardiovascular conditions.

10. Audiogram interpretation.

11. Use of nebulisers, delivery of oxygen through mask and nasal prongs.

12. Establish intravenous access and set up a fluid line in the practice.

13. Provide antenatal, postnatal and intrapartum care.

14. Assessment and management of health risk factors.

15. Provide preventative health checks for men, women, children and opportunistic medicine.

16. Gestation of insurance medical, driving medical and work cover claims.

17. Assessment and resolution of inappropriate polypharmacy.

18. Mental health examination, treatment, and referral of psychiatric patients.

19. Women’s health care.

20. Paediatric care.

21. Aged care services.

22. Maintenance of a current driving licence.

23. Ownership of reliable transport.

Qualifications & Experience

- Minimum 2 years of GP experience or equivalent.

- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent undergraduate training.

- General Practice experience preferred, with hospital training covering general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics.

- Eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and ability to obtain a provider number for VR or Non‑VR registration.

- Fellowship in General Practice is desirable and will be supported by the existing GP.
