Position Details

Laboratory Technician

Mater Dei College has the opportunity for a permanent, part-time Laboratory Technician to become an integral part of the College’s Science Department, commencing Term 1, 2025.

We are seeking a knowledgeable, pro-active and confident individual to work alongside the Senior Laboratory Technician to manage, prepare, maintain and organise laboratory equipment and materials for classroom experiments and practicals.

This position is available 5 days per week, 8:30am to 3:30pm for 40 weeks per annum.

The Laboratory Technician, in collaboration with the Senior Laboratory Technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are inclusive of, but not limited to:

1. Preparing and supplying materials and equipment for science practical classes, including the purchasing of materials and the dismantling and clean up of experiments and equipment.
2. Preparing risk assessments for science practical classes by advising and assisting science teaching staff in safety matters relating to the science laboratory.
3. Complying with standards and legislation by ensuring the safe handling and storage of hazardous substances, maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets and labelling chemicals correctly.
4. Organising and maintaining laboratories and preparation areas by creating a safe, tidy, and clean environment.
5. General administration duties including liaising with supply companies for quotations and procurement of resources.

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a high level of organisational and time management skills, whilst supporting the Catholic ethos and values of the College.

The successful applicant will additionally demonstrate an understanding of Occupational Health and Safety issues and chemical handling.

Qualifications and/or experience relevant to the role are also highly desirable.

Qualifications Required

1. Hold a current Working with Children Check (WWC)
2. Hold a current National Police Clearance from the Department of Education
3. Hold or be working towards an Accreditation to Work in a Catholic School
4. Annually complete the online Child Protection Procedures and Mandatory Reporting Training and any other mandatory CEWA training

Highly Desirable Knowledge and Experience:

1. This role requires a high level of autonomy, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively
2. Strong interpersonal skills, enabling harmonious and positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
3. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and confident in different situations to provide assistance across a variety of tasks
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
5. Strong time management and organisational skills
6. Experience in computer literacy and proficiency
7. An understanding of Occupational Health and Safety issues
