Our client is a well-regarded insurance and personal services law firm with offices in Sydney and Newcastle. They are a trusted adviser to major government and non-government organisations, acting in complex statutory litigation and high-profile matters within the NSW Dust Diseases jurisdiction.
The firm is known for its positive, down-to-earth culture and supportive environment. Their practice is built around core values of integrity, expertise and respect – both in how they serve clients and how they treat their people.
About the position
Joining our client’s Dust Diseases team as a Solicitor or Associate, you will work on complex defendant matters involving asbestos and other dust-related conditions, acting primarily for government agencies, departments, insurers and large employers.
You will:
- Manage your own portfolio of dust diseases, personal injury and workers’ compensation matters
- Critically review and interpret detailed medico-legal and factual evidence
- Draft complex advices, correspondence and court documents within tight timeframes
- Prepare matters for mediation and hearing with an eye on practical, cost-effective outcomes
- Build strong relationships with sophisticated government and insurer clients through clear, timely communication
At the Associate level, you will also play a key role in mentoring junior lawyers and support staff, helping to shape the next generation of litigators in the team.
This role is ideal for a defendant-side litigator who enjoys technically challenging work, medico-legal issues and the fast-paced nature of the Dust Diseases jurisdiction, while still wanting a collaborative team and sensible expectations around hours.
Key Requirements
- Admission as a Solicitor in NSW and a current NSW practising certificate
- 5+ years’ post-admission experience in litigation, ideally defendant
- Minimum 2+ years’ experience in personal injury, workers’ compensation and/or dust diseases matters
- Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation and case law in NSW
- Excellent analytical, drafting and written communication skills, with high attention to detail
- Well-developed organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently when required
- Confident communicator who can build rapport with government clients, insurers and peers
- For Associate level: proven experience coaching, mentoring and supporting junior lawyers and support staff
- Genuine commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
On offer
- Permanent role with a successful, forward-thinking insurance and personal services firm
- High-quality defendant dust diseases and personal injury work for major government agencies and insurers
- Direct access to and mentoring from experienced partners and senior practitioners who are leaders in this space
- Real work‑life balance, with flexibility and work-from-home options
- Friendly, cohesive team with a strong sense of collegiality and open‑door leadership
- Structured learning and development, including clear pathways to progress your career
- Regular social, team and firm-wide events throughout the year
