Overview

VALS invites Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants to apply for the Aboriginal Community Justice Panels (ACJP) Project Officer role. The position supports the ACJP in designing and implementing a professional service model across pilot sites (Shepparton, Mildura and Bendigo). It reports to the Statewide Chairperson and focuses on governance, risk management, consultant oversight, and high‑quality reporting to senior government stakeholders.

Location: Preston Office, VIC. Salary: $124,676.64 – $135,000 + 11.5% Superannuation. Full-time, fixed term for 12 months. This is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander designated position under Section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

Key Responsibilities

- Support planning and delivery of high‑impact transformation projects aligned with ACJP objectives and funder expectations.
- Lead project governance: prepare agendas, minutes, action logs and decision registers for steering committees and working groups.
- Manage external consultants and service providers to ensure deliverables, accountability and value‑for‑money.
- Oversee project risks and mitigation strategies; monitor timelines and budgets.
- Prepare funder reporting, including status updates, briefing notes, dashboards and progress submissions.
- Develop and deliver presentations and written materials for senior stakeholders and executive leadership.
- Collaborate to ensure a unified approach to change, communication and delivery.
- Monitor progress using appropriate project management methodologies and tools; support continuous improvement across ACJP.
- Undertake other duties within the scope of the role as directed.

Key Selection Criteria

- Admitted or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in Victoria and the High Court of Australia (unrestricted).
- Experience acting as an advocate and delivering information, advice, and casework; capable of negotiation and dispute resolution for VALS clients in Family Violence, IVOs, and related matters.
- 4+ years of practical experience in Family Violence, Intervention Orders, Family Law or Child Protection.
- Ability to supervise, mentor and develop solicitors, paralegals and CSOs; strong interpersonal and communication skills with Aboriginal communities.
- Commitment to VALS values and understanding of legal issues facing Aboriginal communities in Victoria.
- Proficiency in MS Office and ability to quickly learn VALS client management systems.

Mandatory Requirements

- Current Employee Working with Children Check.
- National Criminal History Police Check.
- Proof of work rights in Australia (passport, birth certificate, or visa).
- Current valid Australian driver’s licence.
