About the role
Are you a motivated and commercially savvy Legal Counsel looking to make an impact? Join our dynamic in‑house legal team and work closely with the General Counsel and working closely with the Head of Collections and Workout, this role provides critical legal support across Shift’s debt recovery operations and the lending business.
This will include
- Preparing and lodging caveats and mortgages.
- Overseeing and optimising the design of legal workflows that support Shift’s collections and recovery strategy.
- Managing and responding to day‑to‑day legal queries from law firms and Collections & Workout Teams relating to accounts.
- Ad hoc legal advice and negotiation of contracts.
This is a hands‑on, commercially‑focused role suited to a junior lawyer with debt collection/litigation experience and the ability to manage competing priorities across legal advisory and collections support.
What you’ll do
Caveat and mortgages:
- Mortgage and caveat registrations, including preparation and lodgment of documents with relevant land registries.
Debt Recovery – Working with Collections & Workout Teams:
- Act as the key internal legal contact for the Collections and Workout teams, providing practical advice and timely legal support across recovery matters.
- Where appropriate, contribute to design and execution of debt recovery strategies.
- Drafting settlement deeds, repayment arrangements and restructuring documentation.
- Lodging caveats and mortgages.
- Assisting with AFCA dispute responses.
- Providing the business ad hoc legal/regulatory advice and review of contracts as needed.
What you’ll bring
- 2–5 years plus legal experience in lending/debt collection litigation.
- Relevant legal skills in drafting legal documents including caveats, mortgages and settlement deeds.
- Experience in the management of commercial debt collection litigation preferred.
