Orange City Council, Australia Loam Bio Pty Ltd Full time

As a team of scientists, farmers, and entrepreneurs, we are on a mission to revolutionise agriculture and address climate change. Through our cutting-edge microbial technology, we are enhancing soil health, boosting crop yields, and sequestering carbon to create a sustainable future for farming. We are committed to empowering farmers and promoting regenerative practices that benefit both the environment and their bottom line.

As a fast-growing agricultural startup, Loam offers a dynamic and collaborative work environment where innovation and passion thrive. We embrace diversity and believe that our collective expertise and shared commitment can make a significant impact on the global agricultural landscape.

The GIS Specialist will play a key role in developing, managing, and optimising geospatial tools, processes, and data to support the successful delivery of carbon projects under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) and other standards. This role focuses on leveraging automation and advanced GIS processes to improve efficiency, reduce manual workloads, and ensure accuracy in all geospatial outputs.

Key Responsibilities & Outcomes

1. Develop and Maintain GIS Tools

- Responsibility: Design and improve GIS-based tools (e.g., feasibility tools, mapping reporting tools, experience builder, Survey123) to streamline workflows, with a strong emphasis on automation.
- Outcome: Deliver and maintain GIS tools that significantly reduce manual geospatial processing through automation and innovative workflows. Ensure timely resolution of issues and maintain strong user satisfaction through responsive support and ongoing tool refinement.

2. Undertake GIS Mapping

- Responsibility: Create Carbon Project GIS maps by defining project boundaries, Exclusion Areas, Emission Accounting Areas (EAAs), Carbon Estimation Areas (CEAs), strata, sample points, conducting mapping variations and restratification in line with soil carbon sequestration protocols, and generate reports utilised data visualisation techniques.
- Outcome: Ensure compliance with ERF guidelines and internal requirements, and that accurate and up-to-date GIS data supports effective project planning, monitoring, and regulatory compliance.

3. Data Management of Geospatial Data

- Responsibility: Store and label Carbon Project GIS data (geodatabases and related data) in a consistent and secure manner, and create SOPs defining best practice.
- Outcome: Ensure all GIS data is organised, labeled, and stored consistently to support data integrity, accessibility, and long-term usability across multi-year project lifecycles. Maintain SOPs to guide best practices across teams.

4. Contribute to GIS Audit and Offset Report Requirements

- Responsibility: Prepare required GIS data for auditing and soil carbon credit issuance.
- Outcome: Ensure compliance with ERF guidelines and enable smooth and timely ACCU issuance.

5. Develop AU Mapping Process Improvement & Documentation

- Responsibility: Maintain SOPs, improve GIS workflows, and ensure detailed tracking of project data. Manage AU AGOL spaces, sharing protocols, and integration of new features for improved project visibility and collaboration
- Outcome: Ensure efficient, automated, and standardised GIS processes to enhance operational effectiveness, reduce manual errors, maintain audit log of mapping changes and improve scalability.

6. Provide Administrative & Team Support

- Responsibility: Assist with mapping components of project registration, in-field soil sampling, compliance, and coordination.
- Outcome: Achieve timely project registrations, maintain compliance, and support seamless team operations.

Key Skills & Qualifications

- Tertiary qualification in GIS, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Demonstrated expertise in automating GIS workflows using tools such as Python (ArcPy, GeoPandas), ModelBuilder, or equivalent scripting frameworks. Minimum of 3-4 years experience in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data management.
- Experience with AGOL (ArcGIS Online) administration, integration, and automation.
- Familiarity with carbon project methodologies, preferably under the ERF, is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams and manage competing priorities.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Personal Learning Budget: Support for professional development and continuous growth.
- Flexible Work Environment: Options for remote work to support work-life balance.
- Impactful Work: Contribute to global efforts in environmental sustainability and agriculture.
- Training and Development: Access to a personal development plan with ongoing training opportunities.
