Overview
The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a motivated and collaborative Clinical Vascular Scientist (CVS) to join our Vascular Assessment Unit (VAU). The team consists of eight qualified vascular scientists, two trainee vascular scientists and a supportive administration team. The post involves cross-site working at our hub site based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and hospitals in Worthing, Shoreham, Haywards Heath and Eastbourne, with travel expenses provided for all travel.
The role involves a high degree of autonomy to undertake and report on a full range of specialist vascular science diagnostics in settings such as VAU, one stop clinics, the ward, and theatre/recovery. The team also regularly provides on-table assistance during foam sclerotherapy sessions, for which training is available if needed. The post supports CPD with protected non-clinical time, study days and conferences, and opportunities to participate in CSVS activities.
Main duties / Responsibilities
- Independently (unsupervised) perform, interpret and accurately report specialist diagnostic vascular ultrasound investigations in a range of environments to enable appropriate and timely clinical decision-making.
- Ensure reports are saved to appropriate information storage systems (e.g., PACS) in line with information governance requirements.
- Recognise sub-optimal tests and modify examinations using experience; seek a second opinion when necessary and provide second opinions for colleagues.
- Report urgently or routinely to the referring clinician depending on findings; analyse clinician requests and prioritise tests according to clinical need and resources.
- Assist in the management of VAU daily workload, including trainee requirements, and allocate sites according to daily pressures.
- Raise and report concerns or limitations affecting patient management; maintain safe, clean and tidy clinical work areas and diagnostic equipment.
- Communicate test reasons and results, including clinical significance, to patients in an empathetic and compassionate manner; ensure confidentiality and dignity at all times.
- Be responsible for patient safety and well-being during tests; provide specialist advice on vascular pathology, ultrasound and diagnostic methods to patients, nurses and clinicians.
- Attend MDT meetings to explain and discuss findings with surgeons, physicians, radiologists and nurses.

Person Specification
- Current holder of The College and Society for Clinical Vascular Science (CSVS) Accredited Vascular Scientist status.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Excellent computer and administration skills.
- Willingness to teach and train others.
- Commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect; ability to establish good working relationships with patients, carers, administrators, healthcare professionals and managers.
- HCPC registration as Clinical Scientist (Vascular).
