Advanced Practice Nurse Overview
As a Clinical Nurse Consultant in SESLHD you will play a pivotal role at Prince of Wales Hospital in clinical service and consultancy, clinical leadership, research, education and clinical services planning and management.

The Role
The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is ‘exceptional care, healthier lives’. The nursing vision for Prince of Wales Hospital is ‘Transforming Person-Centred Care Together’. As the Clinical Nurse Consultant you will utilise your extensive experience and/or qualifications to provide after hours expert person-centred care within the facility. You will be consulted for patients and carers, nursing staff and junior medical officers. The APN will undertake clinical patient assessments and contribute towards clinical investigation and overall management of complex, acute medical and surgical conditions. A strong focus of the role relates to working with staff in the clinical areas when patients are directly admitted to the clinical areas after hours from the Emergency Department or transferred from intensive care/acute care units.
You will assume leadership roles which promote clinical practice advancement, act as a role model and expert clinician to patients, carers and staff after hours, contribute to facility and role-based quality and research initiatives, and provide education to the after-hours staff in line with the CNC role, including advanced life support. You will be part of a team that strives to support each other to reach our potential and continue to be innovative in approaches to practice.
Where You'll be Working
Prince of Wales Hospital is a Level 6 Tertiary Referral Hospital with an inpatient bed base of 370. Each year we care for more than 70,000 patients in the Emergency Department and about 50,000 admissions to the inpatient units. POWH offers an outpatient service and rural outreach service and provides more than 900,000 occasions of non-admitted patient care each year, including innovative virtual models of care. We have transitioned the majority of inpatient units and wards to the Acute Services Building (ASB) which includes a state-of-the-art Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. POWH provides an exceptional staff experience and enhanced patient and family outcomes as a result of person-centred care. The surrounding Randwick Local Council provides a vibrant community, beautiful beaches, historic buildings and restaurant culture.
Selection Criteria
- Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse/Clinical Nurse Consultant/Clinical Midwife Consultant Grade 2.
- At least 5 years full time equivalent post-registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field and approved postgraduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field.
- Demonstrated ability to apply clinical expertise in a consultant role and work independently.
- Proven clinical leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
- Demonstrated evidence of critical thinking in the delivery of advanced evidence-based nursing care.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and implementing change, developing direction in clinical practice through evidence-based research within a person-centred framework.
- Effective interpersonal skills, advanced written and verbal communication, advanced computer skills and use of software programmes to analyse data and produce reports.
- Ability to contribute to strategic and clinical service planning.
