Purpose of Role

At Hardchrome Engineering Pty Ltd, the Metal Machinist plays a vital role in the manufacture, repair, and refurbishment of precision metal components used across industries such as mining, steel, energy, and transport. The role involves setting up and operating machine tools, fitting and assembling metal parts, and machining metal stock and castings to fine tolerances before and after advanced surface treatments such as hard chrome plating, laser cladding, and heat treatment.

Task & Responsibilities

Machinists are responsible for creating parts and tools with precise measurements, often using lathes, milling machines and other equipment.

- Set up and operate machine tools: This includes lathes, mills and grinders to manufacture parts to precise tolerances.

- Interpret blueprints and technical drawings: Read and understand engineering drawings and blueprints to create parts that meet specifications.

- Select and install tooling: Choose the appropriate tools and machine parts (cutters, drills, inserts, etc.) for the job and install them correctly.

- Measure and inspect workpieces: Use precision measuring tools to ensure that finished parts meet design specifications and tolerances.

- Monitor machine performance: Make adjustments to machines during operation to ensure continuous quality production.

- Troubleshoot machine problems: Identify and correct issues with machinery, such as tool wear, improper settings, or malfunctions.

- Work with various materials: Machinists often work with metals like mild steel, stainless steel or brass and bronze.

- Ensure safety and compliance: Follow all safety protocols to prevent accidents and maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications & Experience

Skills and Competencies

- Strong knowledge of metal machining processes, including turning, milling, grinding, and drilling.

- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.

- Competence in setting up and operating both manual and CNC machining equipment.

- Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments.

- Understanding of industrial coatings, plating, and heat treatment interactions with machining processes.

- Problem‑solving ability in mechanical repairs and fault diagnosis.

- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications and Experience

- Certificate IV equivalent or higher trade qualification.

- Minimum of 1 year’s experience as a machinist in heavy industrial or precision manufacturing environments.

- Experience with large rotating components or hydraulic systems preferred.
