About the Department

The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) services all of Alfred Health and as of February 2026 also Western Health. Immunology services are located at the main laboratory at Prahran. The services of APS include routine and esoteric laboratory testing with complete specialist support for test interpretation.

The various APS units are affiliated with Monash University, and most Consultants hold honorary or substantial teaching appointments. APS is actively involved in educational and professional development training programs for under-graduate and post-graduate students, medical students and registrars. The units are also involved in and support a wide range of research activity in association with hospital clinical units, Baker IDI, Burnet Institute, Monash University and other groups. APS actively supports ongoing professional development and research within areas of diagnostic interest.

About the Role

Alfred Health is looking to recruit a Specialist in Immunopathology (Fractional) to work 0.2 EFT at the Alfred as part of the Shared Pathology Service. An additional 0.2 EFT is advertised through Monash Health and we would encourage a specialist to apply at both health services.

The Immunopathologist plays an important role in the supervision and interpretation of the immunopathology diagnostic tests, providing advice to clinicians at Alfred and externally on available tests and follow up of abnormal results. The position also requires participation in aspects of laboratory management (quality control/quality assurance and OHS), development/evaluation of new tests, staff education and research. The immunopathologist is responsible for the supervision of diagnostic immunology including allergy, autoantibody immunofluorescence and automated assays. They contribute to protein chemistry and flow cytometry assays with appropriate specialist knowledge of immunopathology.

Responsibilities

- Supervision and interpretation of immunopathology diagnostic tests.
- Provide advice to clinicians at Alfred Health and externally on available tests and follow up of abnormal results.
- Participate in laboratory management (quality control/quality assurance and OHS).
- Develop/evaluate new tests; contribute to staff education and research.
- Supervise diagnostic immunology including allergy, autoantibody immunofluorescence and automated assays.
- Contribute to protein chemistry and flow cytometry assays with specialist knowledge of immunopathology.

Qualifications

- Applicants must be legally qualified practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
- A Fellow of The Royal Australian of Pathologists of Australasia in Immunopathology.
- Demonstrable relevant knowledge and experience in Immunopathology and compliance with Alfred Health credentialing and scope of practice in Pathology.
