Reports to: Child Care Coordinator, Child Care Manager, and ultimately Director of Child Care
Direct Reports: OSC Front-Line Staff teams; the number may vary and is determined by licensing ratios and enrollment numbers.
Hours/work schedule:Part-time position of up to 30 hrs./week; this includes Morning Care, Afternoon Care and Administrative hours.
Monday through Friday, your daily schedule will be determined by program needs and may vary at any time during operating hours (7:15 am - 5:30 pm).

Position Overview
The Team Lead is crucial in fostering positive relationships with the children in our care, their families, and for the day-to-day operations of the Out-of-School Care Program. This includes program and curriculum planning that is holistic and aligned with the organizational values and the Early Learning Framework., as well as working effectively with staff, families, and children, connecting with the community, mentoring students, recording appropriate documentation, maintaining current files, developing a strong collaborative team, and providing leadership in keeping with the philosophy of Fernwood NRG Child Care Programs.
Responsibilities
Staff Supervision
Hold self and child care team accountable for:
Providing excellent care
Adhering to the daily and staff schedule (or leading staff to find a solution/be flexible if a deviation from the schedule is required)
Have the flexibility to change shifts to help provide coverage for absent childcare providers when required.
Help support staff through conflict resolution in a timely and appropriate manner.
Document all instances of inappropriate staff conduct and report them to the leadership team.
Ensure staff are following appropriate behaviour and guidance strategies with the children.
Program Delivery and Operations
Ensures the health and wellbeing of the children by being supportive, caring and present.
Promotes social-emotional wellbeing by identifying and labelling emotions in self and others.
Establishes and implements clear, appropriate rules, limits and guidelines for developmentally appropriate behaviour.
Set reasonable behaviour expectations consistent with the center's philosophy and policies.
Provide positive guidelines, such as redirecting, using positive language, and offering positive reinforcement.
Immediately address disruptive and unsafe behaviour without labelling the child.
Establish and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child-directed activities, care routines, and transition times.
Help children express themselves by listening attentively and responding with questions or comments that extend their conversations.
Plan and conduct experiences that foster an understanding of diverse cultures and value systems.
Establish daily eating routines that are fun for children.
Ensure the child's environment is healthy and safe:
Follow licensing requirements.
Designs supportive, emergent and inclusive environments.
Follow the centre's procedures for administering medications and maintaining health records.
Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the coordinator or manager promptly.
Monitor the environment for hazards.
Attend to children's physical needs, such as toileting and eating, as promptly as possible.
Report all incidents of child abuse or neglect to the leadership team and follow centre procedure.
Release children only to authorized persons, and make sure to check ID and files for any persons that you have not met beforehand.
Assists with daily cleaning and sanitizing.
Contribute to the ongoing operations of the centre:
Carry out the responsibilities as assigned.
Attend regular staff meetings.
Participate in the performance review process.
Maintain regular attendance and punctuality, and actively communicate with the leadership team when you will be absent or late.
Work collaboratively with other staff who are also working in the shared spaces.
Administrative and Duties/Documentation and Reporting:
Administrative duties, including but not limited to Maintenance of children's files, staff files, and any other program-related files, communication with parents/guardians, and inventory of supplies and materials.
Offer valuable input and actively contribute to the development of care plans when required.
Other duties as assigned.
Work with the leadership team to ensure that all licensing requirements are met.
Ensure positive communication with families:
Discuss the program's daily events and the child's daily progress with families.
Maintain a knowledge and understanding of the services offered by Fernwood NRG for referral to families.
Ensure that families are aware of programming activities and the location of the OSC group.
Point of contact for parents and guardians.
Builds and maintains professional working relationships with parents and guardians.
Working Conditions / Equipment Used
The work environment is diverse, necessitating clear communication and an approach of curiosity rather than judgment.
Shared spaces and furniture require some physical exertion, including the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds, such as chairs, tables, and mats.
The shared work environment may be busy and loud.
As a community center operates as a public space, there may be occasions when individuals or families in crisis seek assistance, requiring adherence to organizational protocols and safety procedures for interventions.
Ability to stand for long periods, run occasionally, crouch and bend frequently.
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum 1-year experience working directly with children aged 5-11
Leadership experiences are an asset.
Ability to meet the requirements for a "Responsible Adult" with Child Care Licensing Regulations, including 20 hours of Child Development training
Must be 19 years of age
Documentation in accordance with licensing requirements: Record of immunization status, two professional references, First Aid certified
An understanding of the issues that affect children and their families
Ability to support the growth and development of staff
Effective interpersonal skills under all types of conditions, exhibiting a supportive, positive approach

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace, and this position is part of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) bargaining unit. We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits, with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.
Please note that following the ratification of the collective agreement, union dues will be deducted from employees' pay in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective agreement and BCGEU policies.
