About the Role

The Nurse Manager, will manage, maintain and promote the professional standards of Nursing Practice, whilst managing the operational resources of the Unit. Directly reporting and liaising with the Operations Manager of Cardiac Services, General Manager of Specialty and Cancer Services and the Director of Nursing Fitzroy Campus, the NUM will be responsible for providing mentoring and leadership to the Nursing Profession in the Unit.

Key duties include

- Daily clinical coordination of the ward / unit, liaising and communicating with key stakeholders

- Provide leadership to all staff inclusive of efficient leave management, staffing allocation, performance management and mandatory training requirements are undertaken as required

- Perform as a role model, communicating and providing direct leadership across the Cardiology unit to ensure the maintenance of high standards of nursing practice

- Ensure local guidelines and Hospital wide policies relevant to the clinical specialties are developed and updated as per Organisational requirements

- Ensure compliance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service standards and provide Nurse Manager representation on hospital committees as required

Classifications for this position will range from NM11 - NM12 ($126,074 - $130,509.60 per annum pro rata)

4 West (CCU/Cardiology) is an 18 bed cardiac unit comprising of 6 Coronary Care beds and 12 Cardiology beds. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
4 West (CCU/Cardiology) is an 18 bed cardiac unit comprising of 6 Coronary Care beds and 12 Cardiology beds. The unit cares for patients with a range of cardiac and related respiratory conditions including acute coronary syndromes, rhythm disturbances and heart failure, as well as patients pre and post coronary angiography and pacemaker insertion and other specialist procedures. The Coronary Care Unit provides care to patients requiring cardiac monitoring, temporary pacing, inotropic support, intra aortic balloon pumping and non-invasive ventilation.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Nurse Manager, will manage, maintain and promote the professional standards of Nursing Practice, whilst managing the operational resources of the Unit with regard to organisational objectives, policies and procedures. Directly reporting and liaising with the General Manager of Specialty and Cancer Services and the Director of Nursing Fitzroy campus, The NUM will be responsible for providing mentoring and leadership to the Nursing Profession in the Unit.

POSITION DUTIES
 Daily clinical co-ordination of the ward/unit
 Liaise with the Access and Demand Unit to coordinate timely access to allocation and admission of patients
 Working with, and collaboration with, all program areas and clinical specialties to support effective discharge planning across the health service
 Communicate and provide direct leadership across the Cardiology unit to optimise standards of patient care
 Act as a role model to staff, setting communication clinical and behavioural expectations that hold staff accountable for meeting these expectations
 Provide leadership to all staff inclusive of efficient leave management, staffing allocation, performance management and mandatory training requirements are undertaken as required
 Ensure the team is mentored, developed and educated to understand strategic direction and operational imperatives and to build collaborative relationships with key stakeholders
 Organise and participate in Unit and Staff meetings and orientate new staff as required
 Support and orientate the Cardiology Medical team to the clinical area
 Communicate and escalate appropriately to the Heads of Units as required
 Data entry and interpretation of information on Health-e Workforce and KRONOS in relation to staffing, availability and rosters
 Participation and Nurse Manager representation in hospital committees as required
 Maintain local guidelines and Hospital wide policies relevant to the clinical specialties are developed and updated as per Organisational requirements
 Ensure 100% compliance with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards
 Complete relevant Operational reports as required
 Recruitment and facilitation of the Post Graduate Cardiac Certificate with the Education and Learning Department
 Provide structured leasdership and mentorships to ANUMs and leadership teams to ensure all key priorities are well communicated with and a strong and supportive succession plan is in place

Clinical Quality and Safety
 Ensure clinical care is undertaken within established procedures in order to provide safe clinical care for patients/residents, ensuring clinical risk is minimised
 Ensure clinical staff work within their approved scope of practice and at all times with appropriate supervision. .
 Ensure all clinical staff maintain their clinical registration and any required indemnity cover
 Ensure all junior clinical staff are appropriately supervised by senior clinical staff and trained to provide safe clinical care
 Ensure all staff attend necessary training that enhances safety and quality of clinical care
 Promote a culture that supports learning and encourages reporting of errors
 Implement systems to identify and manage risks and to deal with and learn from incidents and complaints
 Implement all facets of the SVHM safety and clinical quality programme within clinical area managed
 Collaborate with more senior levels of management to implement the SVHM safety and quality agenda
 Provide feedback to more senior management in relation to problems or issues that impact on safety and clinical quality.

 Participate in reporting and analysis of safety and quality data including risks or hazards,
 Report any hazards, near misses and incidents (regardless of whether an injury occurred or not) into Riskman
 Identify and report any variance to expected standard and minimising the risk of adverse outcomes
Human Resource Management
 Ensure that workforce planning is regularly undertaken and implemented to provide for the ongoing resource needs of the area they manage
 Ensure recruitment and rostering practices comply with applicable Enterprise Bargaining Agreement and cost effectively support delivery of quality service
 Ensure new employees are properly inducted to their local work environment and attend the General Hospital Orientation program
 Ensure all those who work in the area managed, undertake an annual performance review and are continually developed to reach their full potential
 Ensure leave is rostered fairly and that employees in the area managed, regularly take leave and do not accumulate excessive leave except where a plan is in place as to when that leave will be taken.
 Actively manage individual and team performance to maximise performance and minimise workplace problems and conflict.
 Continuously seek individual and team improvement and take responsibility for the introduction of any changes required to bring about such improvements.
Financial management
 Participate in the development of the annual budget allocation for the area managed.

SELECTION CRITERIA
8.1 ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
 Degree in general nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
 Current Nursing Registration with AHPRA
 Postgraduate clinical nursing qualification in cardiology, or equivalent (certificate or above)
8.2 OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
 Advanced cardiac nursing knowledge with speciality cardiac nursing experience
 Experience in the management of a clinical unit, ward or department
