Where the team fits in

This role is within the Membership and Leads to Keys Portfolio which sits within the Consumer Group of the business. Consumer Group’s mandate is to be the number one destination for Australian property and real estate through having the most engaging and best real estate and property experience. This includes the AI Workflows & Experience team (part of the Consumer Experience division), where you’ll help shape the future of the user property journey by building intelligent AI Assistants that enhance our web and app experiences.

We design scalable, real-time AI solutions using Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Agentic AI architectures. Our mission is to deliver helpful, personalised and engaging experiences like smart recommendations, listing insights and conversational support that empower users throughout their journey.These two squads work closely with many teams across the business, including several teams in Consumer Product & Experience, Customer Product & Experience, PropTrack and Data Services, among others.

What the role is all about
As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence and delivery success across your squads. You will be responsible for delivering on the product roadmap by enhancing technical solutions, ensuring engineering quality, and leading a team of individual contributors to achieve organisational goals. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and delivery leadership to foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance environment.

As a Senior EM you operate at a larger scale in a highly complex environment with Machine Learning and Data Scientists. You will oversee multiple squads. You are practiced at operating at scale by delegating critical technical decisions and team practices to staff and senior engineers in your team. As a Senior EM you will identify and develop individuals into both expert and engineering management pathways.

- Contribute to and define the tech strategy for the business unit.
- Involvement in building the product strategy, vision & OKRs through representing the technical aspects.
- Oversee and execute the technical strategy of the team.
- Lead the technical design of solutions within your team.
- Maintain systems health and engineering compliance.
- Oversee the technical operation of systems your team owns. At REA we practice “You Own it You Run”. Ensure your team contributes to your groups support roster & supports resolution of related incidents.
- Contribute to product discovery through tech direction & feasibility assessments.
- Lead engineering excellence through best practices, including design patterns, clean code, Test-Driven Development (TDD), and unit testing.
- Lead adoption of REA standards & platforms and align with tech strategy in your team.
- Contribute the tech component of GIF business cases.
- Support other teams that use or contribute to your teams' systems & service, e.g. through federation.
- Review mission critical PRs.
- Review IPRs and pairing where appropriate.
- Guide and manage individual contributors to foster career development and team cohesion, typically you will have 5-12 engineers in your team as your direct reports.
- Deliver the product roadmap, tracking and communicating progress.
- Provide forecasts and timelines contributing to product roadmaps.

Who we’re looking for

- Extensive experience in leading and motivating multiple engineering teams in an agile environment
- Advanced technical expertise in the data science/machine learning field
- Proven ability to craft robust end to end solutions and manage intricate production systems with proficiency
- Demonstrated experience in building strong interpersonal relationships, ensuring seamless collaboration among diverse groups.
- Strong ability to navigate multiple priorities and foster continuous improvement
- You champion delivery success and innovation by leading with integrity, encouraging your team to adopt best practices and align with strategic objectives
- Proactively addressing challenges, you foster a culture of constant enhancement, driving both technical progress and team unity
