About This Opportunity

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for Senior Research Fellows to join The University of Queensland's Global Centre for Mineral Security. The role focuses on delivering high-impact research, education, technical assistance, and capacity building to support the sufficient and affordable access by all people to the minerals necessary for human development. Our vision is to reduce poverty, improve livelihoods, and enhance sustainable development. The Senior Research Fellows will leverage their established track records and national recognition to further develop their international reputation.

Key responsibilities will include:

- Research:

- Lead the development of impact-focussed research projects with external funding, in collaboration with national and international development partners.

- Collect and analyse data from fieldwork and desktop research

- Develop and maintain global stakeholder networks in poverty and sustainability

- Publish scholarly papers and research reports

- Present findings in public forums, such as conferences and webinars

- Contribute as Chief Investigator to major research funding applications, actively seeking, securing, and managing funding for projects and activities

- Support the translation of knowledge, technology, and practices to end users, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property

- Conduct independent or collaborative research that influences policy, practice, or commercialisation, achieving national and growing international recognition

- Utilize best practice research methodologies

- Teaching: Where teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

- Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.

- Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

- Completion of a PhD in the fields of geography, social science, political science, physical sciences, geology, economics, or engineering.

- Extensive demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of minerals and sustainability, with potential application to global development and poverty reduction.

- National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.

- Experience leading and delivering multi-disciplinary projects, defining priorities and execution plans, outlining detailed task description for team members, coordinating workloads, and monitoring progress, adopting accepted project management techniques.

- Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop cooperative research initiatives.

- A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.

- A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.

- A growing record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities

- Ability and enthusiasm to travel and work in other locations, with international field experience on minerals related research in Africa, Asia Pacific or Latin America. Fluency in another language is highly regarded.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
