About us
Legal Aid NSW delivers accessible legal services across criminal, family and civil law. We provide advice, court representation, and family dispute resolution through 28 offices and phone-based support, helping people navigate the legal system with confidence and fairness.
Legal Aid NSW and its Family Law Division are committed to supporting vulnerable clients through a trauma-informed, client-centred approach. Our team is dedicated to empowering clients by providing holistic support and advocacy tailored to meet client needs.
About the role
This role works jointly and collaboratively with lawyers to support to clients with complex social and legal needs in family law or care and protection matters to achieve the best possible outcome. This includes goal setting, capacity building, support attending Court, safety planning, and assistance to access government and non-government services. The role also provides clinical expertise to address the socio-legal needs of disadvantaged clients, including victims of domestic and family violence, people experiencing mental health challenges and people with complex trauma histories.
About you
The ideal candidate will have:
- a proven ability to build and maintain strong collaborative interdisciplinary relationships to enhance service delivery to clients
- experience in casework or case management role/s and experience working with adults facing disadvantage
- commitment to improving outcomes for clients navigating challenging legal and personal circumstances
- strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients
- sound social science knowledge and a commitment to understanding the legal system to offer informed consultations that contribute meaningfully to legal strategy
- confidence in managing their own workload to enable them to work autonomously as the sole applied professional within our team of lawyers
Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse clients would be particularly desirable.

The essential requirements for this role
You must:
- Be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check
- Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency(for ongoing vacancies)
- Have 5 years’ minimum relevant experience
- Have Diploma Level 5 and above (minimum 2 years study)
- Have the ability for remote travel when required
The Family Law Division have several roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working with Children Check. You will be required to provide your Working with Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check.

Target Question 1: Briefly describe a time you used a trauma informed approach to engage a client who was initially reluctant or disengaged?
Target Question 2: Provide a brief example of a challenge you faced when working in an interdisciplinary team and how you resolved this?
You must clearly label your responses to each Target Question, for example, by using headings such as Target Question 1 and Target Question 2. Cover Letters that do not clearly label responses may be considered as not having addressed the Target Questions.
We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for similar ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months.
