Research Scientist – Australian Institute of Marine Science
The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia’s number one tropical marine research agency.
We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, and respect.
AIMS’ research of Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems guides its effective environmental management, and that of similar systems around the world. Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and support the sustainable use our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.
AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique data-sets, cutting-edge laboratories and a fleet of research vessels.
About this Opportunity
When you join AIMS, you will become part of a team of thought leaders, trusted advisors, and game-changing innovators. This exciting opportunity is now open in our Oceanography and Shelf Processes Team for a Research Scientist – Physical Oceanography and Coastal Processes. Operating within our Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems and Industries in Tropical Australia Research Program, you’ll be part of a group that delivers science relating to the critical issue of cumulative stressors in a broad range of tropical marine habitats arising from coastal and catchment development, in the context of shelf-scale processes and ecosystem drivers.
Using your international scientific reputation and experience, you’ll lead several important activities including the management of physical oceanographic observational programs across northern Australia, the development and application of numerical modelling tools relevant to Australia’s tropical coastal and continental shelf systems, and research into estuarine, coastal and shelf-scale sediment transport processes.
You’ll provide scientific leadership to colleagues, support staff and students, and ensure that resources such as facilities, equipment and associated are coordinated and allocated effectively to address scientific and environmental management challenges. You would be motivated to achieve the targets of the AIMS Strategy 2025, to provide positive environmental, social and economic impact for Australia’s marine estate.
Apply now and join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions. The successful candidate will be rewarded with:

- Full-time, 3-year opportunity
- Located in Townsville, Queensland
About You
Underpinning your suitability for this position will be your PhD in a relevant discipline (physical oceanography, coastal processes, coastal engineering or marine biogeochemistry) or equivalent, and extensive professional experience demonstrating substantial work in observational and numerical modelling studies of coastal marine environments, coupled with professional experience in the operation and management of ocean observing networks.
As a high performer with a demonstrated track record of scientific output and advanced leadership and project management skills you can demonstrate your:
- Highly developed capacity to develop and apply numerical models of coastal and shelf processes;
- Excellent numerical skills related to the analysis of spatial and time series data;
- Demonstrated high level of familiarity with contemporary hydrodynamic, sediment transport and biogeochemical modelling tools and packages;
