As a Volunteer Mentor, you will support a young person to develop a positive and safe relationship with an adult role model, connect into their community, pursue their interests, and work towards individual goals. The guidance you provide will help increase their social confidence, reduce feelings of isolation, and develop their capacity to build diverse, positive, and sustainable community connections.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

- Providing appropriate role modeling and support to young people
- Encouraging young people to consider education, training, and employment opportunities
- Promoting and assisting community participation
- Participating in core training and regular meetings with the program coordinator

To be successful in this role, you will have:

- A genuine interest in being a positive role model and supporting young people to reach their potential
- Aligned values with Jesuit Social Services' mission and ethos
- Commitment and ability to work effectively with young people and the community
- Willingness to work with young people facing challenges such as disabilities, mental health issues, victimization, and childhood trauma
- Willingness to participate in 12 hours of core training
- Availability once a week for at least 1 hour to spend with the mentee/young person
- Willingness to undergo regular supervision and attend occasional professional development
- Valid Working with Children Check Card
- Successful interview and police check conducted by Jesuit Social Services prior to commencement (at no cost for volunteers)

About the program:

The Community Connection Mentoring program provides extended community support to young people involved in the Child Protection system, residing in residential or home-based care, and transitioning into independent living. Volunteers are matched with young people for a 6-12 month mentoring partnership, meeting weekly in the community. Mentors and mentees can stay in touch beyond the formal period. The program includes recreational activities to foster enduring relationships, reduce isolation, and promote hope and opportunity. Group activity days are also offered to enhance community building.
