are-able Ltd (are-able), formerly WDEA Works, started in 1989 as a service to help clients with a disability enter the workforce.
For over thirty years, are-able has been a leader in transforming lives within local communities, providing essential services, and fostering meaningful connections. The organisation has helped more than 40,000 people find meaningful and inclusive employment, improving their lives and enriching local communities.
From humble beginnings with just three dedicated employees in Warrnambool, are-able rapidly expanded to Colac, Portland, and Hamilton. Today, are-able serves diverse communities across Victoria's western districts and extends its impact into South Australia and Queensland and employs over 400 people.
are-able is a not-for-profit entity, a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
are-able's consolidated revenue at 30 June 2024 was $84.8M. With $22.8m in net assets, are-able remains committed to positive community impact.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a sector undergoing significant change. You will work alongside passionate board members and a committed executive team to deliver services that empower individuals and strengthen communities.
The positions
Due to recent retirements at board level, are-able are seeking a Non-Executive Chair and two Non-Executive Directors to join the board and help shape the future of the organisation in the evolving disability sector.
With the new appointments of the Non-Executive Chair and two Directors, the are-able board will consist of eight Non-Executive Directors, including the Chair.
Key selection criteria
The board is seeking to recruit a Non-Executive Chair and two Non-Executive Directors with skills, knowledge, and experience in one or more of the following:
1. Proven CEO or senior executive experience in an organisation of comparable size and complexity, with a demonstrated focus on organisational growth, sustainability, and effective risk management.
2. Expertise in government policy, regulation, and funding frameworks, particularly those relevant to the disability or community services sectors.
3. Strong commercial and strategic leadership capabilities with the ability to contribute to the development and oversight of long-term strategic plans in a dynamic and evolving disability sector.
In addition, the Non-Executive Chair will have extensive experience as a Chair or senior board leader in an organisation of comparable size and complexity, with a proven ability to lead a high-performing board and foster effective governance.
An understanding of regional and rural contexts will be highly regarded. Graduates of the Australian Institute of Company Directors' Course (or equivalent) will be viewed favourably.
The board is seeking at least one candidate located in the are-able footprint which includes south west Victoria and the Mackay and Rockhampton region in Queensland.
The Chair and Directors are remunerated by way of a base fee with additional loadings for committee chairs.
