Overview Biosecurity Plant and Science Services Division — Melbourne, VIC Apply laboratory knowledge, organisational skills, and initiative to support critical plant health diagnostic testing that safeguards Australia’s biosecurity. Play a key role in laboratory operations by managing procurement, stock and asset management, and equipment maintenance. Provide essential laboratory support to enable scientists to deliver diagnostic testing, with the role focused on operations rather than scientific analysis. Contribute to biocontainment, safety, and laboratory assurance standards. Work collaboratively within the local laboratory team and as part of a connected national operations network. Responsibilities - Support diagnostic testing through laboratory preparatory work, including reagent preparation, autoclaving, waste management and data entry. - Manage laboratory resources by procuring consumables, processing invoices, maintaining chemical and asset inventories, and coordinating equipment servicing in collaboration with suppliers and service contractors. - Maintain accurate records and reporting to meet compliance and quality standards. - Monitor laboratory spaces to ensure they remain safe, functional, and compliant with biocontainment and quality requirements. - Promote and uphold safe laboratory practices and contribute to continuous improvements in biosecurity, safety, and quality systems (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025). - Collaborate across laboratory networks to ensure harmonised workflows and provide operational support to scientific staff. - Actively contribute as part of a national Laboratory Operations team, attending local meetings and face-to-face meetings as required. Participate in team meetings with colleagues across Australia. - Assist team members with both technical and administrative tasks, fostering a positive and cooperative work environment. - Stay informed of technical developments relevant to laboratory operations. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience - Laboratory experience, with knowledge of laboratory safety, biosecurity and biocontainment, with the ability to apply them in daily operations. - Experience in laboratory procurement and resource management, including ordering consumables, processing invoices, liaising with suppliers and service contractors, and coordinating equipment maintenance to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations.
