What you will be doing:
This position is suitable for medical officers (PGY 3 and above) who are interested in training in intensive care medicine. Most will be registered as trainees with the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) and will be preparing to sit the CICM primary examination. Some may be preparing to sit the primary exam recognized by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).
You will be involved in the management of Intensive Care patients in a quarternary centre with appropriate level of supervision. You will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in Intensive Care Medicine and engage in education and research activities. Candidates for this position will engage in self‑directed as well as work‑directed learning of relevant principles and material.
This role has a focus on excellence in managing Intensive Care Patients in a quarternary centre and will offer you training toward a higher qualification in Intensive Care Medicine.
The Department of Intensive Care Medicine
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is one of Australia’s largest, and provides care to over 3,800 patients admitted per annum to 52 beds. The unit employs 15 full‑time intensivists, and supervises and trains 30 full‑time ICU junior medical staff at any one time.
RPA is one of two ECMO referral centres in NSW and is now a world leader in this novel rescue therapy for severe reversible respiratory/cardiac failure. RPA can provide experience in the management of such patients that is second to none.
Our service co‑manages patients from all clinical departments at the hospital, including trauma, complex surgical, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, liver and renal transplantation and bone marrow transplantation units.
RPA ICU comprises 4 contiguous patient care areas: two general ICUs, a cardiothoracic surgical ICU and a neurosurgical ICU.
The unit has full CICM accreditation for all levels of training in intensive care medicine.

Qualifications
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.

- Demonstrated career goal to undertake further training in intensive care medicine and demonstrated aptitude for acute care medicine.
