Overview

You will perform specialist painting, coating, and finishing of structural steel, bollards, handrails, concrete surfaces, machinery bays, road surfaces, car parks, and epoxy-coated floors. You will work under supervision or independently, ensuring surfaces are properly prepared, coatings are applied correctly, and finished surfaces meet safety, durability, and aesthetic standards.

Salary: $80,000 plus superannuation.

Responsibilities

- Prepare surfaces (steel, concrete, asphalt) by cleaning, grinding, acid etching, sandblasting, or other preparation techniques to ensure proper coating adhesion.
- Remove old paint, rust, scale or contaminants from structural elements such as bollards, handrails, kerbs, and machinery bays.
- Fill holes, cracks, and surface imperfections using patching compounds or mortar for concrete, or suitable fillers for metal surfaces.
- Apply primers, sealers, epoxy base coats, and other preparatory products to treated surfaces.
- Mix and prepare paints, epoxy coatings, sealants and anti-slip or protective finishes according to manufacturer specifications and environmental conditions.
- Apply paint and coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment, including airless and low-pressure spray systems.
- Perform epoxy floor coating application in industrial areas, car parks, and machinery bays, ensuring proper thickness and curing.
- Apply line marking, road marking, stenciling and surface signage as part of complete carpark or road surface solutions.
- Inspect surfaces and finishes for defects such as uneven coverage, bubbling, pinholes, and perform corrections or touch-ups as required.
- Clean and maintain painting tools, spray equipment, mixing gear, and safety equipment in accordance with safety and operational standards.
- Safely erect and use ladders, scaffolding, mobile platforms and fall protection equipment for elevated or hard-to-reach areas.
- Ensure work areas are clean, safe, and protected using drop sheets, masking, and barrier systems to avoid overspray or damage.
- Dispose of paint waste, chemical containers and solvents according to environmental and WHS regulations.
- Read and interpret work orders, site plans and technical specifications to determine surface preparation and coating requirements.
- Work collaboratively with other trades and supervisors to complete jobs within project timelines and quality standards.
- Follow all workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, especially when working with hazardous materials or in high-risk environments.

Qualifications & Experience

- Trade qualification (Certificate III in Painting & Decorating or equivalent) or demonstrated trade-level experience.
- At least 2 years’ experience in industrial, structural, or surface-coating environment (steel, concrete, epoxy, road/coating works).
- Proven competency in surface preparation, coating application, spray systems, and quality control in similar contexts.
- Strong understanding of coating systems, materials, curing procedures, adhesion testing, environmental conditions.
- Familiarity with WHS standards, chemical handling, PPE, and safe working procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, coating schedules and instructions.
- Good communication, teamwork, and ability to coordinate with multi-trade operations.
