City of Melbourne, Australia Amber Electric Full time

About Amber ⚡ Amber is a new way to buy and sell power, designed for a world powered by renewable energy. We give customers direct access to the real‑time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 mins and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It’s a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy. We’re a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation and are growing rapidly (over 50k customers). We’ve also recently expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in the UK. We are backed by leading VCs (including Square Peg Capital from Australia and Environmental Technology Fund from UK), impact‑focused investors and individuals, and corporate partners (including E.ON Next, Gentrack, and Commonwealth Bank). We’re now at a critical moment in scaling as we disrupt a huge market for the better. You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 170, with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations. We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world. About the Role As Amber enters its next critical phase of growth, we are looking for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to partner with the Co‑CEOs and executive team. This role is pivotal in navigating the complexities of scaling a high‑growth company at the intersection of technology and the electricity markets. We are currently approaching $20m/year in Net Revenue, with a clear path towards >$100m in next few years (driven by both rapid growth in Australia and licensing technology deals). A rough goal for the role would be to get the financial fundamentals into an “IPO‑able” position over this time horizon (even if an IPO isn’t actually a business focus for us). You will be the financial cornerstone of the company, responsible for leading our financial strategy, engaging with investors, managing risk, and mentoring a high‑performing finance team of 6. The ideal candidate is a seasoned finance leader who can blend meticulous financial detail with high‑level communication, acting as a trusted partner to the Co‑CEOs and a credible representative of Amber to our board and investors. You will be responsible for ensuring the business remains financially robust and resilient to achieve its ambitious mission. Key Responsibilities - Strategic Leadership & Investor Relations: Partner with the Co‑CEOs to shape the company's financial strategy. You will own the financial narrative and be a key point of contact for our Board, existing investors, and prospective capital partners. - Financial Planning & Analysis: Own and evolve our financial model, providing insightful analysis and strategic guidance to the executive team and board. Your ability to translate complex financial data into a clear "so‑what" will be critical for decision‑making. - Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and develop our talented finance team. You will foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and proactive partnership with the rest of the business. - Risk Management & Controls: Bring a proactive and "paranoid" approach to risk management. You will be responsible for identifying and mitigating financial, operational, and market risks, particularly those unique to the energy retail sector. This includes owning our prudential management, hedging strategy, and ensuring robust financial controls are in place. - Financial Operations: Oversee all financial operations, including reporting, treasury, cash management, payroll, accounting/audit, and compliance. You will ensure the finance function is a bastion of accuracy and efficiency. - Executive Partnership: Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to company‑wide strategy and working collaboratively with other departments to drive improved financial outcomes across the business. What We're Looking For - Proven experience as a CFO or senior finance leader (e.g., VP Finance, Head of Finance) within a high‑growth, venture‑backed technology company or similarly complex environment. - A demonstrable track record of successfully raising capital (both equity and debt). You have the credibility, gravitas, and communication skills to build immediate trust with sophisticated investors and financial stakeholders. - Exceptional leadership skills: experience building, scaling, and mentoring a high‑performing finance function. - Deep expertise in risk management within a complex, regulated industry. Experience in energy, commodities trading, or financial services is highly desirable. - Experience working within global organisations, managing international revenues, costs, and reporting across different jurisdictions. - World‑class financial modelling and analytical skills. You can operate at the lowest level of detail but always focus on the strategic implications. - A hands‑on, proactive mindset suited to a fast‑paced scale‑up environment, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities. - CA/CPA qualification or equivalent is strongly preferred. Benefits - We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world. - You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 150 with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations. - Be part of a growing technology start‑up that will shape the future of household renewable energy use. - Flexible working hours with provision for regular work from home arrangements and a central hub in Melbourne CBD. - Equitable gender‑neutral parental leave policies. - An external Employee Assistance Plan for mental health support. - Competitive salary and shares in Amber. - Annual Learning & Development budget to support your personal growth. This is a full‑time role to be based ideally from Melbourne, but we are also open to considering the right candidate anywhere within Australia. 🌈 If this kind of work gets you excited, we'd love to hear from you Even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements listed above, we still encourage you to apply. We're open to all backgrounds and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. We never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. ✍️ How to Apply Please include your resume and a cover letter that briefly explains your experience in partnering with CEOs to navigate capital raises, lead finance teams, and manage risk in a high‑growth environment. Our hiring process: As this is a critical strategic role for Amber, we plan to run a rigorous (but flexible) process that will likely include some or all of the following: ●A screening call with our talent team. ●An early call with the Co‑CEOs (Chris and Dan) about the role and a high‑level feel for fit. ●A take‑home case study to anchor interview conversations. ●Interviews with members of the finance team, peer executives, and Board members. ●In‑depth reference checks with former colleagues. We promise to be respectful of your time as an applicant while trying to be as thorough as possible in finding the right fit for our team. #J-18808-Ljbffr
