The Role:

The Squad Lead - Digital Product Engineering role is a senior key leadership position within Medibank/'s Platform Engineering team.

This role is accountable for leading and managing the delivery of digital platforms, solutions, integration services to Medibank. This includes the design and implementation of the operating model to enable effective and efficient service delivery to customers.

The key purpose of this role is to define, guide and expand the capability of the Product Engineering team, delivering highly scalable digital assets. The role spans all aspects of the delivery lifecycle and includes leadership of the digital platform and solutions, development and integration and digital support teams. You will provide architecture capability for the Digital Services and Solutions department and actively contribute to the ongoing technology roadmap.

As an experienced Digital practitioner, we/'re looking for an experienced professional, with the ability to establish a vision, communicate across the business, and drive successful business outcomes leveraging best-practice frameworks, methods, and operations.

Responsibilities

- Actively participate and contribute to the planning and management of the Platform Engineering function as a key member of the Platform Engineering leadership team.
- Assist the GM Platform Engineering in developing and executing a clear strategy and plan for delivering business-outcome focused digital services to Medibank.
- Develop strong relationships and manage stakeholder expectations through both day-to-day interactions as well as a regular operating rhythm for Platform Engineering.
- Drives alignment and integration of solution, platform, and automation work across Platform Engineering along with broader enterprise architecture.
- Develop and maintain processes, methods, and tools that are aligned with Platform Engineering best practices.
- Enable thought leadership and drive the capability of emerging technology into Platform Engineering through ongoing POCs, technical demonstrations, and showcasing the latest technologies in market.
- Define clear performance measures and KPIs for digital platforms and regularly measure and report on these to the Platform Engineering leadership team.
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Product Engineering team, circa 180+ FTE with 3+ direct reports, including resolution of operational and service delivery issues.
- Work with enterprise, solution, and platform architects to align business stakeholders to leverage technologies to enable business transformation.
- Connect the broader Platform Engineering function to industry and partners, establishing a culture of best practice sharing.
- Collaborate with the Product Engineering leadership team on the recruitment, development, retention, and motivation of the Product Engineering team.
- Ensure team members have clear and measurable KPIs, regular 1:1s, performance reviews including development and training plans.
- Schedule and facilitate regular team meetings, fostering communication, collaboration, and teamwork.
- Encourage a learning culture, investing in skills development for cloud, streaming, AI/ML integration, and emerging data technologies.
- Promote agile and product-centric ways of working, ensuring teams focus on delivering measurable business outcomes.
- Own the full financial management of the Product Engineering portfolio, including annual budget planning, forecasting, and cost optimisation.
- Monitor and control operational expenditure (Opex) and capital expenditure (Capex), balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term financial sustainability.
- Drive financial transparency by establishing clear reporting and accountability mechanisms for platform-related spend.
- Partner with Finance and Procurement teams to ensure compliance with corporate financial policies and governance standards.

About You

- Demonstrated experience building and leading product technology teams, with 7+ years/' demonstrated experience leading a strategic technology function within a corporate environment.
- Strong technical expertise in digital platforms, solution delivery, integration and API platforms, automation and tooling, governance, service quality, and operations.
- Experienced in establishing technology processes, frameworks, and governance, ideally for both waterfall and agile environments.
- Experienced in inspiring, motivating, and developing teams.
- A genuine interest and experience in developing teams and providing stretch opportunities to support their career goals.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communicator, particularly in terms of simply presenting complex concepts to stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate to successful and practical outcomes where conflicting viewpoints or priorities exist.
- Experience with managing multiple deliverables simultaneously and ability to prioritise based on strategic outcome realisation.
- Proven ability to design and facilitate workshops with business and technology stakeholders to support architectural efforts.
- Extensive software design and implementation leadership experience covering the following technologies: AWS, AEM, GIT, Jira, Confluence, Bamboo or equivalent, Java, JMS, Springboot, Jenkins, Tomcat, Apache, REST, SOAP WSDLS, AJAX.
- Experience leading a Technology function in a transformational environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and engage cross-functional teams and deliver outcomes across the matrix.
- Experience in large global organisations using in-sourced and out-sourced IT service providers.
- Exceptional relationship management experience coupled with demonstrated experience in presenting to influence executive teams.
- Deep understanding of lean and agile practices, and the ability to utilize this to effectively focus and manage people and teams.
- Experience in establishment of digital technology functions for large organisations using both agile and waterfall delivery models.
