Overview

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne. On 1 January 2026, Alfred Health will merge with Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to form Bayside Health, a newly merged health service with more than 22,000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The merger will create new training, education and career opportunities, and subject to final approval on 1 January 2026, all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

Role and Location

- Full Time at 76 hours per fortnight – Part Time hours will be considered
- Grade 1 Administrator (incremental increase up to Grade 1 Level 5)
- Located at Alfred and Sandringham Hospital

About the Team

Alfred Pathology Service (APS) provides a comprehensive range of pathology testing, consultation services and collection services. The Service has 5 units (Anatomical Pathology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Human Molecular and Microbiology). Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a formal partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service as part of metropolitan Melbourne pathology networks. All roles in the Pathology Programs support the Partnership to continue delivering high quality care across the health services.

About the Role

- Receive specimens for all Pathology disciplines.
- Data entry of patient test requests in the Laboratory Information System.
- Prepare specimens for analysis and storage.
- Distribute specimens to all Pathology Units.
- Register patient and specimen details, including additional tests requested by doctors.
- Prepare samples for referrals to external laboratories.
- Load samples onto the Pre-Analytical Track and troubleshoot track errors.
- Answer general queries for test and sample requirements for internal and external stakeholders.
- Answer telephone enquiries and provide pathology results to authorised people.
- Office Administration duties including receptionist (switchboard) duties, and patient-facing tasks such as covering the pathology outpatients front desk, as required.
- Maintain the section’s refrigerators and freezers; defrost and clean as required.
- Rotate between shifts at both Alfred and Sandringham laboratories in line with operational needs.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Specimen Processing Supervisor.

Skills and Experience

- Flexibility to work across multiple sites and as part of a 24/7 roster.
- Proven reliability and punctual attendance with respectful behaviour in a team environment.
- Written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work positively with others.
- Ability to follow procedural documentation with a focus on accuracy and competency.
- Basic to intermediate computer and data entry skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of Pre-Analytical laboratory processes, or ability to learn quickly.
- Experience with a Laboratory Information System such as Cerner PathNet (Highly Desirable).
