The Opportunity
We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic law graduate to join our team on a full-time basis. As a law graduate specialising in defendant institutional tort claims, you will play a crucial role in providing legal support and representation to our clients and will be responsible for managing a variety of cases involving institutional tort allegations, working with defendants and their legal teams to develop effective defence strategies and ensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Manage a caseload of defendant institutional tort claims from inception to resolution with adequate supervision.
- Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and prepare various legal documents.
- Analyse complex legal issues, review case material, gather evidence, and assess liability and damages.
- Collaborate with senior lawyers to develop and execute defence strategies.
- Attend negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.
- Provide ongoing guidance to clients throughout the litigation process.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, ensuring compliance with client service standards.
- Stay up to date of relevant legal developments and changes in legislation pertaining to institutional tort claims.
This permanent position is well suited to an individual that is looking to advance their career and gain hands‑on experience in a supportive team environment.
Skills and Experience

- A Bachelor of Laws or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of Australian tort law, civil procedure, and relevant legislation.
- Confidence to deal directly with clients.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively with experts in multiple fields.
- High degree of initiative, dedication and organisational ability with a strong client and commercial focus.
- Ability to manage a busy workload and work to tight deadlines.
- A commercial approach and ability to articulate and negotiate effectively.

In return, McCabes will provide you with the opportunity to work with a talented team in a flexible, inclusive, and innovative environment. We also promote a culture focused on the firm's values – integrity, excellence, and courage – that provides opportunities to develop and progress your career.
We are small enough to give you the personal attention and career development to help you reach your full potential, yet large enough to provide the challenge of diverse, high-quality work and clients.
