About the role
The CAMHS Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Mental Health Worker is responsible for ensuring optimal consumer care. Addressing cultural safety and undertaking culturally informed engagement, assessment, education/advocacy, counselling and group work are essential components of care which is directed towards consumer health and recovery. This involves ongoing consultation, liaison and co-work with other CAMHS disciplines, government and non-government organisations. The CAMHS Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Mental Health Worker uses expert cultural knowledge, skills and experience in the application of direction, support, orientation and education to other staff and leads and participates in action research projects, quality improvement activities and policy development within the practice setting.
Key duties
- Establish relationships to enable contact with Aboriginal children, young people (and their families) experiencing social and emotional difficulties or mental health distress in the worker’s region and significant services within the worker’s scope and area of practice.
- Collaborate and co-work as required with CAMHS workers and other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal services in the provision of social and emotional wellbeing/mental health and community services.
- In conjunction with CAMHS clinicians, provide expert cultural knowledge to support clinically safe and relevant mental health assessment of clients and families.
- Provide cultural information and advice to assist in effective mental health assessments and therapeutic interventions for Aboriginal children and young people.
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrate ability to integrate Aboriginal cultural experiences, philosophy and practice in the provision of social and emotional/mental health services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families.
- Negotiate the boundaries of safe practice with reference to current knowledge and skills, and know when to refer to other professional disciplines.
- Promote cultural safety within CAMHS by raising awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and factors affecting positive mental health outcomes for children, young people and families.
- Demonstrated experience in engaging with Aboriginal children and young people (and their families) to enable their needs to be met.
- Experience in contributing to mental health assessment and therapeutic interventions for Aboriginal children and young people through cultural knowledge and advice, and contributing to development, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic programs.
