Bunbury, Australia Synergy Plus Pty Ltd. Full time

We're leading Western Australians to their intelligent energy future.

And we want you to be part of it.

You might know us as Western Australia's largest electricity generator and energy retailer, supporting 1.2 million customers across the state.

But what you might not know, is that we’re investing in renewable energy projects, including wind farms and big batteries, to help build a more sustainable and reliable future.

Our Big Battery is now live in Kwinana, we’re expanding the Warradarge Wind Farm, the WA EV Network has launched, and we have many other projects in the works.

We're a purpose-driven organisation, owned by the people of WA. Our commitment is to ensure all Western Australians have access to secure, reliable, and sustainable energy.

We believe that the benefits of renewable energy aren’t just for some, they're for everyone.

This is where you come in.

Role Description:

The Senior Future Energy Engineer is an exciting 12-month Max-Term Contract opportunity in our DER & Engineering team based at our Perth Central Park office. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of the energy landscape by contributing to Distributed Energy Resource (DER) solutions and renewable energy projects.

The successful candidate will provide subject matter expertise in network connection, regulatory, and operational requirements for DER, supporting technology teams in the development of DER orchestration solutions and virtual power plants. A strong focus on collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders is essential to ensure solutions meet the evolving needs of the energy transition while maintaining high engineering standards.

In addition, the role will provide thought leadership and technical guidance to support Synergy’s DER strategy and contribute to government policy and regulatory reform, helping to drive innovation and excellence in the energy sector.

Job responsibilities:

- Represent Synergy in national working groups focused on the standardisation of DER communications protocols.
- Develop internal standards and procedures to ensure the effective, safe, and scalable management of aggregated DER fleets.
- Act as a subject matter expert on DER connection processes, technical rules, and market regulations to support the implementation of DER aggregation services.
- Provide specialist engineering advice across the DER and renewable asset lifecycle to inform strategic and operational decision-making.
- Collaborate with AEMO, Western Power, EPWA, and internal cross-functional teams to enable the seamless integration of DER into the electricity network.

What you will bring:

- A tertiary qualification in Electrical/Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of six years’ hands-on experience in an engineering role, ideally within the energy or utilities sector.
- A strong understanding of control systems and the electricity grid, including DER integration.
- Familiarity with DER communications protocols, preferably IEEE 2030.5/CSIP-Aus.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical information.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and regulatory bodies.
