The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Sergeant, to provide a critical role within Justice Services / Sheriff's Office Victoria.
About the Business Unit
Justice Services (JS) is a business unit within Corrections and Justice Services group at the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS). JS is responsible for the direction, management and operation of Victoria's Community Correctional Services system across Justice Service Centre locations and Victoria's adult parole system. JS also supports the delivery of critical justice services across Victoria on behalf of program partners, Youth Justice community operations, Sheriff's Office Victoria (SOV), Consumer Affairs Victoria, Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria and Births, Deaths and Marriages.
SOV is a branch within DJCS's Courts, Civil and Criminal Law group. SOV provides strategic direction to an operational workforce of sheriff's officers across the state who are responsible for enforcing warrants and orders issued by the courts, making members of the public accountable for unpaid fines and contributing to a safer Victoria.
About the Role
The Supervisor is a region‑wide in‑field resource, accountable to a Regional Manager, and provides effective management of a team of sheriff's officers and senior sheriff's officers, overseeing the effective and efficient enforcement of warrants to ensure the achievement of the clearance of warrants and undertaking more sensitive, complex, and higher risk warrant actioning and field duties.
The enforcement of warrants is facilitated by applying sanctions against those who do not comply with court orders by having legislative authority to take certain actions in compliance with ethical standards and procedural guidelines.
The Supervisor is responsible for sheriff's officers and senior sheriff officers' formal supervision, performance management and mentoring. Additionally, in conjunction with the Regional Manager, the Supervisor plans and oversees field operations, including actioning targeted responses and coordinating joint activities with other agencies.
The Supervisor provides senior, strategic support focusing on the achievement of performance targets. This is achieved by: contribution to regional operational and service delivery planning; managing a caseload; supervising assigned operations, complex cases, and work projects; and participation in the review and improvement of operational procedures and processes.
The Supervisor position is a uniformed role and requires the incumbent to work on a rostered work pattern.
Some of your duties will include:
- Manage a team of sheriff's officers and senior Sheriff's officers in a complex work unit with the execution of standard and non‑standard process, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
- Plan and schedule daily work activities, maintain accurate records, undertake, and prepare reports relating to special projects and routine activities.
- Develop, coordinate and implement projects and prepare reports, briefs and associated correspondences as directed by the Regional Manager.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Hold current “Bailiff” title, as appointed by the Sheriff of Victoria.
- Demonstrated operational experience and expertise in Victorian Sheriff's Operations.
- Demonstrated competency in executing all SOV warrant types (criminal and civil matters) including an understanding of the Sheriff’s Act 2009, Infringements Act 2006 and Fines Reform Act 2014.
- Demonstrated understanding and competency in accessing and utilising Victorian Infringement and Enforcement Warrants (VIEW) system.
- Demonstrated experience as a Subject Matter Expert in the delivery of coaching and mentoring to sheriff's officers and senior sheriff's officers.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of Certificate IV Court Operations (Compliance).
- Successful completion of Certificate IV Training & Assessment (desirable).
- A current Victorian drivers' licence.
