Bendigo, Australia Drover Ag Full time

The Employer

There is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Assistant Farm Manager seeking to advance their career within a dynamic, family-owned farming business that manages several farms totalling 18,000 acres along the eastern coast of Victoria. The farms are involved in sheep and beef cattle production, as well as the cultivation of both dryland and irrigated crops, utilising modern infrastructure and technology.

The enterprise includes 4,000 acres dedicated to cropping and is equipped with irrigation systems featuring central pivots. This area produces a variety of crops, including canola, wheat, fodder, and lucerne, suitable for grain, hay, and silage. Furthermore, the operation manages an Angus breeder herd of 600, 2,000 backgrounders, and a finishing capacity of 1,000 to 1,500 head on pasture. The sheep program comprises 4,000 merino ewes and 3,000 cross bred ewes, focusing on background and finishing. There are also 9,000 wool-growing merino wethers.

The Role

As the Assistant Manager, the role encompasses direct reporting to the ownership team, with a strong focus on hands-on involvement and oversight across all three primary business areas.

In livestock management, responsibilities involve collaborating with management to coordinate all livestock movements and husbandry. This includes leading teams focused on sheep and cattle, actively participating in livestock mustering and yard work, and ensuring the general health and nutrition of the animals.

Cropping duties include pasturing management, establishing forage crops, and hay production, which require proficiency in machinery operation. Additionally, responsibilities extend to installing and maintaining fencing and water systems.

General duties involve coordinating teams related to sheep, cattle, and cropping, performing mechanical and general farm maintenance, and accurately logging all activities in the farm management application.

We welcome Assistant Farm Managers who exhibit these competencies and are eager to take on greater responsibilities. Opportunities exist to tailor the managerial role to fit specific interests in livestock, cropping, or mixed farm management. Possession of a team of working dogs is a prerequisite for this position.

The Offer

A competitive salary is offered, commensurate with your skills and experience. The farm is committed to your professional development and will provide a tailored training plan to enhance your abilities in this role.

The position includes air-conditioned accommodation featuring three bedrooms, an outdoor entertainment area, and sheds on five fenced acres where domestic pets and horses are welcome.

Primary and high school buses service your choice of K-12 schooling options. The farm is just a 20-minute drive from Sale, which offers all your shopping, healthcare, and recreational needs, including team sports and beach access. The slopes are only a couple of hours away for winter sports enthusiasts.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork skills and a genuine passion for and in-depth knowledge of sheep, beef cattle, and cropping practices. The successful applicant must undergo a fitness-for-work medical examination and provide a police check. Additionally, the candidate should possess the following attributes:

- Practical experience in pasture and forage management
- Ability to maintain high standards of farm presentation and upkeep
- Proficiency in mechanical operations, water management, and general maintenance
- Attention to detail in all aspects of work is highly valued
- Must own a team of trained working dogs
- Must have a valid manual driver's license and own a vehicle; a truck license is preferred
