Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our team in regional NSW. This pivotal role will lead a major system migration, transitioning customer operations from legacy platforms to the Busable bus transport and payroll ecosystem.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

- Designing and implementing robust data migration and integration workflows
- Developing cloud-based payroll and award interpretation modules under the Passenger Vehicle Transport Award (PVTA)
- Building and maintaining scalable services using JavaScript/TypeScript and AWS infrastructure
- Working in Agile delivery teams to roll out new features across Busable’s modular suite
- Travelling to regional NSW customer sites and being based on-site for extended deployment periods during rollout and transition

Task & responsibilities

- Design, develop, and implement scalable, high-performance software solutions for the Busable platform, with a strong focus on data migration, payroll automation, and system integration.
- Develop robust data transformation and mapping strategies to ensure accurate and efficient transfer of information from legacy systems.
- Collaborate closely with customers and third-party vendors to analyse operational workflows and translate them into modern Busable solutions.
- Contribute to the architecture and enhancement of Busable’s data and AI platform, supporting proactive insights and automated decision-making for fast-paced bus operations.
- Work with product managers, engineers, and customer stakeholders to define, design, and deliver new features and functionalities across the Busable suite.
- Ensure the reliability, security, and performance of the Busable cloud-based infrastructure.
- Conduct code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and promote best practices in Agile software development.
- Troubleshoot and debug complex issues, providing timely resolutions to ensure seamless operation for customers.
- Travel to regional NSW customer sites and be available for extended on-site deployment during rollout and system transition.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, transport industry standards (e.g. GTFS, TODIS), and compliance requirements to continuously improve the Busable platform.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrated experience in a Senior Software Engineer role, preferably within a SaaS or enterprise software environment.
- Proven expertise in developing and deploying applications on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Strong proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, Java, JavaScript (Node.js), or TypeScript.
- Experience with database design and management (SQL, NoSQL).
- Demonstrated experience with API design and integration.
- Proven experience in software or data migration projects, ideally involving complex operational data.
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems (e.g. Git).
- Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team.
- Fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to travel to regional NSW to assist with technical migration and customer on-boarding.

Desirable Criteria

- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- Experience with large-scale operational systems in the transport or logistics sector, including payroll and award interpretation.
- Familiarity with Australian enterprise agreements such as the Passenger Vehicle Transport Award (PVTA).
- Experience integrating payroll and accounting systems (e.g. Xero, MYOB).
- Exposure to government transport reporting standards such as GTFS, TODIS, TransXchange, NeTEx, or SIRI.
- Knowledge of real-time telematics or driver behaviour monitoring systems.
- Experience with accreditation and compliance systems in a regulated industry.
- Prior exposure to front-end frameworks beyond React (e.g. Angular, Vue.js).
- Experience with AI/ML concepts applied to operational optimisation.
- Experience working in a startup or high-growth technology company.
