The Indigenous Education Office, positioned within the Enabling Directorate, is committed to promoting the academic success and well-being of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students across all campuses.

Special Requirements

This position is a genuine occupational qualification, under s50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) and is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people only. To be eligible, you must provide a statement and supporting documentation that addresses how you meet each of the following criteria for Aboriginality:

- i. be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; and

- ii. identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and

- iii. be accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.

Supporting documentation may include a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community organisation such as a Land Council or an Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service, or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council.

About the role

Enhance the Indigenous student experience across all academic programmes through close collaboration with academic and professional staff within Schools and central services. This partnership ensures the timely and effective delivery of support services that contribute to improved student retention and successful graduation outcomes. The position reports to the Manager Indigenous Education.

Key Responsibilities

- Participate in the implementation of new student support initiatives with a focus on Indigenous student retention and success.

- Proactively respond to student requests and queries and offer subject matter knowledge.

- Provide effective administration services to support the operation direction of the Enabling office, including coordinating meetings, preparing associated documentation, and various correspondence, presentations and reports.

- Build and sustain positive relationships with external partners, students and relevant internal stakeholders to increase Indigenous student participation and success.

- Support the educational goals of Indigenous students by connecting students to academic and support programmes.

- Mentor and contribute positively to a vibrant community life, and undertake student eligibility assessments for advising on scholarships, support and grants.

Qualifications, skills & experience

- Completion of a Certificate IV and extensive relevant work experience.

- Understanding of the historical and current issues and trends within Higher Education and the challenges facing Indigenous students and the complex relationship that may govern and influence Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures.

- Demonstrated familiarity, sensitivity and respect for the diverse needs, aspirations, and cultures of Indigenous societies.

- Demonstrated ability to influence and forge working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

- Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly, both in a team and independently, in an environment with changing demands.

- High-level computer skills, mainly Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel and Outlook.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
