Location: Melbourne - CBD and Inner Metro suburbs

About us
We create thriving places and connected communities. We bring together transport, planning, land use, precinct and policy functions in a single department to deliver the best outcomes for Victorians.
Together with our portfolio agencies, we are responsible for planning, building, operating and maintaining Victoria’s transport, planning and land services for use by all.
We foster a safe, inclusive and constructive place to work.
About the opportunity
We’re looking for a technical leader to join Vicmap Spatial Services as a Senior Spatial Data Engineer. This is a pivotal role shaping the end-to-end pipelines that deliver Victoria’s foundational spatial data — relied on by emergency services, government, industry, and the community every day.
As part of the Data and Digital Division, you’ll design, build and operate critical data engineering processes, ensuring Victoria’s spatial datasets are accurate, accessible, and continuously improving. From cloud-based DevOps practices to automation of complex ETL workflows, this is a role where your expertise will directly enhance the quality and reliability of services across the state.
What you’ll do
- Lead the design and operation of best-practice validation, ETL processes, and data lifecycle management for Vicmap.
- Deliver innovative, automated solutions that improve data quality and reduce manual handling.
- Provide expert technical advice on data models, governance and risk processes, and integration approaches.
- Mentor colleagues, fostering capability and embedding continuous improvement across the team.
- Build trusted partnerships with stakeholders, ensuring services meet the needs of government and end-users.
What you’ll bring
- Expertise in CI/CD practices and cloud technologies such as Azure DevOps, GitHub, and Bitbucket.
- A track record of leading digital innovation, improving data quality, and applying spatial data to deliver business outcomes.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to advise and influence stakeholders across technical and strategic contexts.
- An inclusive, collaborative approach with a commitment to mentoring others and building high-performing teams.

This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise at scale — supporting data services that underpin Victoria’s planning, emergency response, and future innovation. You’ll work in a collaborative environment with flexible work options, strong professional development opportunities, and a culture that values diversity, safety and inclusion.
Culture and values
We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds representing the community that we serve, including veterans, parents, carers, First Peoples, people with disability, multicultural, multifaith and LGBTIQA+ individuals.
As an equal opportunity employer, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-performance culture. Through shared actions and behaviours aligned with our strategy and direction, we empower our people to thrive and meaningfully contribute to the department’s goals.
What we offer
Working at the Department of Transport and Planning provides people with the opportunity to contribute to creating thriving places and connected communities for all Victorians.
Pre-employment checks and employment conditions
All new appointments to the department will be subject to a National Criminal Records Check, Misconduct Screening, and a Qualification Check where there is a requirement for a mandatory qualification. Information provided to the Department of Transport and Planning will be treated in the strictest confidence consistent with the requirements of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014.
Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa necessary for the nature of the position.
Recipients of Victorian Public Service (VPS) voluntary departure packages should note that re-employment restrictions apply.
Non-VPS applicants will be subject to a probation period of six months.
