**Salary**: $127,467 - $170,579

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 465 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.
**Principal Solicitor (Fixed Term - 3 Years)**
The Office of Public Prosecutions has a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Solicitor to join our team as a Principal Solicitor.
The Policy and Specialised Legal Division (PASL) plays a key role in supporting the DPP, OPP Executive and the broader legal practice. It engages in specialised legal work such as advice to external agencies, collaborates with the legal practice on law reform consultations and other projects and supports solicitors working on prosecution files when issues like potential suppression order breaches arise.
The position of Principal Solicitor is designed to utilise technology to present complex criminal legal concepts to a range of audiences. It offers the unique opportunity to combine knowledge management work with criminal law practice, as the successful applicant will be expected to engage in a variety of advice and other work undertaken by PASL.
Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working options are available.
**About the Role**:
- Lead the creation and review of content on the OPP knowledge management platform in a way which is accurate, timely and distils complex concepts into easily understood content.
- Undertake high level research and analysis of the most highly complex legal and policy issues and provide advice and recommendations as required to OPP Staff, Crown Prosecutors, Counsel, the Executive, DPP and various external agencies to ensure the effective and successful prosecution of cases.
- Undertake highly complex specialised legal work as required across a number of specialised portfolios, including appearances when required.
- Extensive experience in legal practice with a demonstrated focus or interest in criminal law and the law of evidence.
- Demonstrated ability to utilise technology or design skills to present information in a compelling way
- Demonstrated high level analytical and research skills to assist in problem solving, issue identification and responses highlighting the effective use of technology.
The Office is committed to providing a safe working environment for staff, and may require employees to be fully vaccinated against preventable diseases such as, coronavirus (COVID-19) and other transmissible diseases based on Victorian Chief Health Officer's Directions as issued and updated from time to time. Where relevant, proof of immunisation status may be required.
