**The Position**:
The Intensive Care Registrar will manage patients who are admitted into Intensive Care or High Dependency Units at the hospital.

The position holder will manage unit admissions and deteriorating ward patients with conditions including acute coronary syndromes, acute respiratory failure, pulmonary embolus, pulmonary oedema, haemodynamic instability. They will manage post-operative patients including those having cardiothoracic, vascular and neurosurgical procedures. The position holder will take part in supervising and teaching medical and nursing staff.

The position holder will be responsible to the Director of Intensive Care. Duties will include rounding with the intensive care consultant, liaising with medical/surgical teams, clerking and discharging patients as well as leading the rapid response team.

This job affords the opportunity to hone one's critical care skills in a supported and educational environment for those interested in a career in critical care.

The position requires coverage of seven days a week with a rotating roster which includes both day and night shifts. The position holder must demonstrate a professional attitude and flexibility in work role. The position holder is required to hold an eligible medical degree registrable in New South Wales and have a minimum of two (2) years working as a Medical Officer and have experience in working with both junior and senior clinicians.

**Essential criteria**:

- At least three years post-graduate experience

At least 6 months critical care experience (intensive care, anaesthetics or emergency medicine)

Eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to lead the Hospital's rapid response team

ALS accredited

**Responsibilities include**:

- Provide and be competent in the initial assessment and manage patients in critical/emergency position;
- Ensure communication of such assessment to the appropriate consultant;
- Institute immediate treatment as appropriate;
- Accurately recording relevant history and examination, management plan, investigations ordered and actions taken in the patient’s medical record;
- Communicate and co-ordinate effectively with nursing and allied health staff in regard to management plans and diagnostic requests;
- Review results, in a timely manner, of urgent pathology, radiology and other diagnostic tests ordered and advising the consultant of relevant results;
- Communicate any significant change in the patient’s condition to the consultant and/or taking appropriate action;
- Managing the Code Blue and Rapid Response Team;
- Attendance at specific training programs and up-skilling including Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Airway Management, educational programs;
- The position holder is invited to participate in the ongoing ICU research program;
- Must actively participate and present in the education of medical and nursing staff that are rotating through the Intensive Care Unit;
- Actively participate and assist in the Hospital Quality Management program as required and directed by the Director of Intensive Care;
- Carry out other duties concerned with the delivery of medical services as required and/or as requested by the Director of Intensive Care, Director of Medical Services, CEO and/or Visiting Medical Officers;
- Responsible for the care of patients in ICU and the high dependency unit as required, requested referrals by the Director of ICU or VMO to review ward patients and attending a medical emergency within the hospital;
- Responsible for writing up and completing all prescriptions requested/required per shift.

The Hospital is an accredited health care facility offering a range of services, including Operating Theatres, Surgical and Medical, Renal, Intensive Care, Obstetric & Gynaecology, Day Surgery/Endoscopy, Orthopaedics and other Medical Services. The hospital operates a range of support services and contracts a number of diagnostic and Allied Health Services.

The Hospital, one of Sydney's premier private hospitals, is located just over the Harbour Bridge. It is a 233-bed facility with a 12 bed ICU catering to a range of patients including cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, spinal surgery and complex upper GI surgery as well as medical patients from all specialties. The hospital admits roughly 31,500 patients annually and is home to the Melanoma Institute Australia.
