The Senior Policy Officer is part of the Fire and Emergency Management Policy branch, within the Policy and Planning division in Forest, Fire and Regions group. The division is an important part of the Forest, Fire and Regions group, enabling the Department to efficiently, effectively and safely meet its forest, fire and emergency management responsibilities

The Senior Policy Officer is part of the Fire and Emergency Management Policy branch, within the Policy and Planning division in Forest, Fire and Regions group. The division is an important part of the Forest, Fire and Regions group, enabling the Department to efficiently, effectively and safely meet its forest, fire and emergency management responsibilities.

The position is part of the Fire Policy Reform and Strategy team, which delivers strategic projects and provides strategic fire policy advice to the business. In this role, you will work collaboratively across the division, with key partners within and externally, playing a lead role in key projects such as Victoria's Bushfire Management Strategy, and the resolution of legislative barriers to cultural fire.

In this role, you will build relationships and use influence to further policy objectives. The position requires strong policy and critical thinking skills, contextual awareness to navigate a dynamic environment, in addition to project management skills, to ensure advice is timely and well-targeted and initiatives are delivered successfully.

**Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications**
- Tertiary qualification(s) in public policy, law, natural resource or environmental management or similar is desirable.

**Capabilities**
- **Policy Design and Development**:Formulates & communicates public policy options & recommendations; Develops a clear narrative for the policies and business cases including clear problem definition and objectives; Considers impact of policy to strategic plans, community needs, complementing programs and policies across the service.
- **Critical Thinking and Problem Solving**:Takes into account wider business context within business unit when considering options to resolve issues. Identifies recurring problems and prevents future recurrence by integrating solutions into work process. Delivers tangible business outcomes as a result of critically evaluating problems from multiple perspectives and delivering effective solutions.
- **Flexibility and Adaptability**:Works to find new ways to deliver outcomes; Recognises the merits of different options & acts accordingly; Has courage to alter strategies in situations when there are clear indications of existing strategy may not deliver the best outcome; where significant amount of effort or investment has been put in. Builds commitment of others to adopt new strategies to deliver against outcomes.
