About This Opportunity

The primary purpose of this position is to perform research on molecular diagnostics and ensure that the project activities, milestones and objectives are achieved on time.

The project includes research activities to be performed in the laboratory as well as on pig farms.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Performing experimental research in molecular biology.- Optimising molecular diagnostics assays for effluent samples of piggeries.- Extracting DNA from complex sample mixes.- Validating presence of bacteria by culture method.- Proving that DNA from certain bacteria can be found in the effluent.- Optimising extraction method to be able to do extraction on farms without sophisticated equipment.- Performing PCR and LAMP amplifications.- Developing LAMP assays- Traveling to piggeries to sample and performing diagnostic assays.- Troubleshooting and problem solving in the laboratories (at St Lucia and ESP)- Attending lab duties.- Assisting/helping students in the laboratory.- Preparing high quality milestone and progress reports.

Criteria for Academic Performance


This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position through to January 2025 at Academic level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,308.68 - $99,426.59, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $86,941.16 - $116,329.11 annually.

About You

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience in molecular techniques, some bacterial culture experience and preferable some bioinformatics experience.- Undergraduate degree in biology or relevant discipline.- PhD in molecular biology or relevant discipline.- Demonstrated experience and knowledge in molecular biology techniques.- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of DNA amplification technologies, including PCR and isothermal LAMP amplifications.- Ability to plan and execute work independently.- Ability to develop solutions for deployment of technology to non-specialised personnel.- Ability to work productively as a member of a team and to successfully collaborate with colleagues.- High level of communication and interpersonal skills.- Ability to work to deadlines and perform under pressure.- Commitment to upholding the University’s values, and with the outstanding personal qualities of openness, respectfulness and integrity.
