About us
The Supreme Court of Victoria (the Court) is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.
About the role
The Tipstaff is responsible for providing operational, administrative and technical support to Judges in the courtroom and in chambers. The position operates within a complex, demanding and sensitive environment that requires the capacity to exercise discretion, initiative and sound judgment. The role requires excellent organisational skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse range of people in a variety of situations.
Key accountabilities
The duties of a Tipstaff are detailed in the attached position description but specifically include:
- Managing key operational courtroom activities to ensure timely and efficient hearings;
- Operating in-court technical equipment used in the conduct of trials, hearings and e-hearings;
- Performing activities relating to jury management, from empanelment through to discharge;
- Supporting the operational requirements of judges working on regional Victorian circuits.
About you
You are able to demonstrate well-developed interpersonal, and verbal communication skills and have a strong ability to liaise professionally with a diverse stakeholder group. Additionally, you will possess:
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, as well as part of a small, dedicated team;
- Significant stakeholder management experience;
- A current Victorian Driver License;
- A current first aid qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Legal qualifications and/or legal industry experience is not mandatory (although desirable), as all technical training will be provided. We are looking for committed and enthusiastic people who can think on their feet and enjoy a challenge.
