The Eastern Bridge Program Volunteer Peer Worker will work within The Eastern Bridge Program team to provide appropriate and effective support to clients participating in the program. In this role you will be required to draw on your own lived experience of recovery from substance dependence to provide knowledge and instill a sense of hope for the future.
- Key responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the Eastern Bridge Program team to support clients in a caring and non-judgmental manner
- Act as a mentor to clients by sharing common experiences, helping them to set appropriate goals, and providing relevant knowledge and information
- Maintain appropriate relationships with clients
- Follow all Eastern Bridge Program policies and procedures to maintain healthy and safe environment
- Assist in the reduction of stigma towards substance
- using populations
- Provide Police Check, Working With Children’s Check
- Maintain professionalism and integrity whilst in the peer role as a representative of the Salvation Army
- Maintain own recovery and wellness, and be willing to take time away from volunteering role if required to do so
- Ensure a high level of confidentiality and integrity
- Complete the Peer Program training, as well as other relevant training programs where required
- Co-facilitate Eastern Bridge Program groups
- Participate in supervision sessions
- Comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures
- Comply with all legislative requirements
- Complete all necessary induction training
- Ability to travel to and from the Salvation Army Eastern Bridge Program
- Provide information sessions to organisations and groups about the Eastern Bridge Program
- Provide feedback around policies, procedures, program development and delivery
- Attendance and/or presentations at relevant conferences
- Assist in training new peer volunteers
- Qualifications and skills (desired/required)
- Lived experience of substance use
- Completed SHARC Peer Worker training
- Practical knowledge and understanding of issues facing people who are dependent on alcohol and/or other drugs
- Well-developed verbal communication and active listening skills
- High level of emotional intelligence, including the capacity to show empathy and compassion to others
- Ability to use purposeful disclosure to provide empathic support and to create a sense of hope for the future
- Demonstrated ability to positively engage and work
- with people from diverse backgrounds and/or people who have complex needs
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with staff and clients
- Demonstrated ability to self-reflect on own behaviour and recovery
- Ability to build trust, rapport, and encourage authentic connections
- Ability to encourage and support different perspectives of recovery
- Empowering clients to provide program feedback and suggestions
- Capabilities and personal attributes

Communicate Effectively: Listens to others when they are speaking and asks appropriate, respectful questions; speaks at the right pace and volume for varied audiences; clarifies own understanding.

Background checks play an important part in our commitment to being a safe organisation. Where an applicant has disclosable history, the selection process includes a fair assessment and a risk management approach. Time Required & Commitment
- Minimum 6 hours per week
