**The Role**
The Sea Power Centre Australia (SPC-A) is seeking to appoint an APS 6 - Historian to be part of the History and Heritage Team. Under general direction, this person will work collaboratively to perform a number of higher-level research and writing tasks to support the Navy in understanding and making that history available within the organisation and to the wider public.
Key duties of this role are:

- Responding to requests for information from researchers and other stakeholders within government and the wider public.
- Contributing to the development of exhibitions, websites and social media via research and writing to tell the story of the Royal Australian Navy to internal and external audiences.
- Writing material that can be used by Navy as part of its professional military education.
- Writing in-depth well-researched histories that can contribute to an increased understanding and visibility of the Navy’s history within academia.
- Researching, preparing and delivering materials for presentations, podcasts, conferences and other speaking engagements.
- Actively contributing to the growth of the Navy and maritime history field in in Australia through growing networks, mentorships, and opportunities for future scholarship.

**About our Team**
You will be part of a small team that supports the Sea Power Centre’s remit to enhance the understanding of Australia’s maritime and naval environment. This role sits in the History team, which is part of a blended workforce of ADF and APS personnel based in Fyshwick, Canberra. The Navy History team have access to a purpose-built library and archive on-site that represents the best research collection in that field in Australia. The History team works closely with the staff at Heritage Learning Centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and the Shoalhaven, NSW.

As part of our team, you will be instrumental in developing historical materials for a range of audiences. Day-to-day activities will include a balance of research to answer internally and externally driven enquiries, and include a significant amount of time to research and write history. Our primary audience is the Royal Australian Navy, but you will also be writing history with specific additional goals of educating the Australian public and widening the academic debate in Australia. You will also actively be expected to grow and develop networks and support other scholars who are engaging in the about the history of the Royal Australian Navy.
- A strong knowledge of the Royal Australian Navy’s history, or the ability to quickly acquire one through research.
- Familiarity with different historical materials and approaches that could be used to write history that would be relevant to the Royal Australian Navy.
- Experience in researching and writing engaging historical materials with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail for a range of audiences.
- Experience in evaluating and assisting with the development of manuscripts and other material that can be used for publication in a variety of forms (including web).
- Use of high-level written communication and oral communication skills to convey historical material as part of an educational experience.
- A developed ability to work independently including strong time management and the ability to handle competing priorities
- A strong team work ethic that supports others to meet team goals and mentors others to develop their historical abilities and networks.
