Casual Assistant Picture Editor

We are seeking casual assistant picture editors to join our picture desk. The casual assistant picture editor will be supporting the picture editor, as directed, to respond to requests from Guardian Australia departments for photographic support.

**You’ll work on**
- Cultivating creative ideas for illustrating the Guardian Australia stories, network front, features, picture galleries and live blogs
- Liaising with journalists, editors and production across Guardian Australia to ensure the best possible use of pictures to illustrate stories
- Creating galleries, audio slideshows and photo essays as directed by picture editor or their representative
- Editing images in line with Guardian Australia guidelines in preparation for publishing
- Adhering to the creative direction of the Guardian Australia newsdesk and head of photography (UK) to source images that enhance the site
- Commissioning photographers as directed by Guardian Australia picture editor or their representative
- Ensuring all legal issues are resolved prior to pictures being uploaded to grid
- Accurately recording details of pictures entered into Guardian Australia system, including any copyright issues or potential legal issues.

**You’ll bring.**
- Experience working on a picture desk within the national media, including editing images
- Good knowledge of picture agencies and archives
- Experience of commissioning photojournalists
- Experience of using Photoshop and post-production skills eg composites, deep etching, colour and exposure correction
- Knowledge of media law
- Professional relationships with working photojournalists an advantage
- Ability to take professional publishable pictures, including portraiture, documentary, and event images is a bonus
