About the branch
The Litigation & Dispute Resolution Branch (the LDR Branch) provides specialist legal services to a large number of government clients on matters such as:
- General civil, police civil and tortious claims;
- Coronial inquests
- Judicial review
- Representative proceedings (Class actions)
- State care, personal injury and negligence claims;
- Supervision and detention order matters, judicial review and statutory interpretation.
About the role
Due to branch expansion, we are currently looking for a senior and experienced litigator to join the LDR Branch as Special Counsel. This is a new role.
This is an exciting opportunity for a senior practitioner who has gained experience, and developed significant expertise, in a broad range of litigation including complex and high risk matters - and, ideally, who has been involved in representative proceedings (class actions) and understands their complexities and requirements. Much of the litigation managed in the LDR Branch involves personal injuries so knowledge of, and experience in, this type of litigation will be well regarded.
Reporting to the Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor - Litigation & Dispute Resolution, you will work on complex matters that often involve higher levels of risk. You will not have people management responsibilities but will work with more junior lawyers and, where necessary, in teams to deliver advice to our clients.
As a Special Counsel, your specialised expertise will contribute to informed decision-making and will support the long-term success and sustainability of the LDR Branch.
**Responsibilities**:
- Provide expert legal advice (written and oral) to Victorian Government clients in relation to complex and often sensitive litigation;
- As a senior member of the Branch you may be asked to deliver internal training to ensure continuous development of legal staff within the Branch.
About the successful applicant
You are committed to delivering legal services in a manner which is fit for purpose and meets client expectations, whether that is providing robust written advice for a legal audience or explaining a litigation strategy to a ministerial one. You value client relationships and are committed to developing a deep understanding of a client's priorities and expectations.
You can supervise, guide and mentor more junior lawyers and manage projects, whether their timelines are short or longer term. You rise to a challenge, but you bring others along with you.
Knowledge and understanding of the structure and culture of government and of the political and legal sensitivities of operating within the public sector is highly valued but not essential.
