THE ROLE

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join our recently funded Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project, " Creating coolspots: eco-engineering heat-resistant intertidal communities". The project is led by Prof Melanie Bishop, School of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University and Prof Brendan Kelaher, National Marine Science Centre, Southern Cross University. The position will be based at Macquarie University’s North Ryde campus (Sydney, Australia).

This project aims to identify structural characteristics of marine intertidal habitat patches, formed by seaweeds and shellfish, that protect associated species from thermal extremes. This project will generate new knowledge about how thermally sensitive intertidal species can persist in stressful environments. Expected outcomes of this project include new approaches for building heat-tolerant ecological communities on coastal infrastructure, and improved tools for predicting the response of intertidal seaweeds and animals to environmental change. The results of this project will benefit coastal management by identifying conservation and rehabilitation strategies that maximise the resilience of coastal ecosystems to environmental change.

This project is explorative and requires the enthusiasm and intellectual insights of the post-doctoral researcher to fully develop ideas within the well defined framework. The post-doctoral researcher will lead ecological fieldwork on rocky intertidal shores spanning a latitudinal gradient and will assist in translating the research to eco-engineering solutions for marine built structures. The post-doctoral researcher is also expected to assist with the co-supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate research students working on the project.

To Apply:
Essential selection criteria- PhD in Marine Ecology, or a related discipline;- Proven research ability including experience leading fieldwork in marine intertidal environments and in conducting manipulative field experiments;- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including track record of publication/s;- Demonstrated ability to work independently, and in a team environment;- Competency in data analysis and manipulation (with a preference for individuals with skills in R);- Willingness to conduct fieldwork outside of Sydney, including overnight stays at field sites;- Excellent organizational and time management skills;- Understanding of and commitment to QA/QC;-
- Current driver's license.

Desirable selection criteria- Demonstrated experience in co-supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate students on research projects;- Experience in the identification of rocky intertidal biota e.g. invertebrates, macro-algae;- Experience in thermal biology;- Experience in marine eco-engineering.

Salary Package: Level A, Step 6 from $97,621 to $104,622 per annum, plus 17% employer’s superannuation.

Appointment Type: Part-time (0.8 FTE, 28 hours per week), fixed-term up to 2 years.
