THE ROLE

We are seeking to employ a part-time (0.5 FTE) Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a 2 year fixed term appointment, who will be responsible for documenting and analysing the material culture from the sites of Beni Hassan and Qubt el-Hawa as part of an ARC funded Discovery project led by Professors Martin Bommas and Naguib Kanawati.

The appointee will be responsible for identifying all artefacts discovered by previous expeditions to these sites which are housed in international and national museums as well as documenting new finds uncovered by the team during fieldwork. This will involve recording a significant corpus of data over a two-year period, aided by ceramicists who will study the pottery from both sites and provide the Fellow with relevant details for documentation. The Fellow will play an important role in designing and realising the physical and digital displays of a museum exhibition attached to the project, and contribute to the publication outputs of the project in collaboration with the Chief Investigators.

The Department is housed in the Arts Precinct, which also houses the Macquarie University History Museum (which holds the largest collections of ancient glass in the Southern Hemisphere), and state-of-the-art media facilities. The Department has extensive experience of developing and delivering Object-Based-Learning utilising the collection based in the Macquarie University History Museum.

Internationally recognised and celebrated as a leader in its fields, the Department is ranked #49 in the world for Ancient History (QS Ranking 2023). Our experts in cultures from the earliest states to the modern world provide training in Ancient and Modern History and Archaeology in both specialist degrees (in Ancient History and in Archaeology) and majors in the Bachelor of Arts. In addition, the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies (ACANS), also housed in the Arts precinct, holds the largest collection of Roman and Southern Italian coins in the Southern Hemisphere and has developed a collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in the deployment of cutting-edge science for the study of numismatics.

Essential criteria- PhD in a relevant field- Demonstrated experience in high-quality research and scholarship, which may be evidenced by an internationally competitive publication record and/or success in attracting research support;- Experience in documenting and analysing ancient Egyptian material culture- Specialised knowledge of the Old and Middle Kingdom periods of Egyptian History, including Old and Middle Kingdom material culture- Archaeological skills of find documentation and drawing.- A record of enhancing, or capacity to enhance, the University's reputation through engagement with relevant external stakeholders;- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a record of working collaboratively with fellow academic and professional staff;Desirable criteria- Experience of working with collection management systems;- German reading skills;- A record of contributing, or capacity to contribute to a public-facing museum exhibition.
