Intensive Support Worker

HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Intensive Support Worker to join the Youth Justice team in the Metro area, supporting young people aged 10-18 years old in a custodial setting.

**About the Opportunity**

As an Intensive Support Worker (ISW) you will be working an on individual basis with young people aged 10 - 18 years in a custodial setting.

The ISW will provide general support to all young people on the weekends, and will work with other stakeholders and the Department’s Aboriginal Youth Support Officers (AYSOs) to run group based activities.

During the week, you will have a small caseload of young people to provide one to one support, or provide support to the other mentors to have more than one young person up from cell and doing activities.

You will be responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to help young people increase their capacity to re-engage with mainstream activities and increases the number of out of cell hours.

You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to create a nurturing, safe and healthy environment to support young people to develop individual goals and strategies to manage their behaviours and wellbeing.

**About you**:
You will be a dedicated and enthusiastic person who can build rapport with young people and role model socially appropriate behaviour and language.

You will be proactive in engaging young people in a variety of activities to give them learning opportunities. In addition you will be capable of dealing with challenging behaviours in a calm manner and familiar working in a strength based and trauma informed manner.

**ESSENTIAL CRITERIA**:

- Have strengths-based, client-centred, trauma-informed and youth participation approach experience.
- A high level of expertise and experience attained through previous appointments, service, and/or study, qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, Mental Health, Community Services or AOD.
- Experience of working with young people in the Youth Justice System, ideally in a custodial setting.
- Experience of working with at-risk young people in group settings and providing one to one support.
- Experience and / or willingness to work with young people with challenging behaviours (i.e. has de-escalation training, conflict resolution, behavioural management)
- Ability to communicate well with young people, and an understanding of Aboriginal culture
- A broad understanding of the challenges and experiences of people in regional Western Australia.

**DESIRABLE CRITERIA**:

- Has Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training
- Has knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices and Care
- Experience of working with or knowledge of issues impacting young people involved within Department of Justice and Department of Communities Child Protection services
- Knowledge of the effects of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder on young people (or willingness to undertake training)
